Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

I think the -71 series Detroits used a Roots blower. Looks a little different.

Although not made by Roots, it is a Roots-style blower, with meshed lobes to provide low-medium pressure output.

I have seen honest-to-God Roots blowers used industrially, to provide air to certain parts of an airslide system, used to transport powdered product (aluminum oxide) from main storage silos to the application silos, right in the potlines where the aluminum is produced. (The last step in the transport was in a large vehicle which filled up at the end silo, and then dumped the Al2O3 directly into the pots.) The Roots blowers were used where more pressure was needed, mostly centrifugal blowers were used in the rest of the system.
