^ No mention of this dam having been designed to survive a nuclear explosion.
It's a low head dam, its inherently going to be very hard to break - short, fat, and extremely solid. Himars or artillery might punch a hole in a sluice gate, making a big chunk of dam disappear is a whole 'nuther.

Although there is speculation about the cause of the damage, experts who have assessed the images have identified that it is the central section of the dam that has been destroyed. This then progressed to the failure of the whole eastern side of the spillway and the loss of the hydroelectric plant, according to University of Sheffield research fellow in structural and material blast characterisation Andrew Barr.Investigating the source of the damage further, Barr added: “The water level was at a record high before the breach, but usually a failure caused by overtopping in a dam like this would initiate on the earthen embankments and not on the reinforced concrete spillway, which is designed to manage regular discharges of water. If the sluice gates had been damaged leading to an uncontrolled discharge of water, this wouldn't be expected to cause the progressive collapse of the main concrete structure without significant additional damage elsewhere.”

These factors have led Barr to support the claims that the failure was initiated by an explosion, though the subsequent damage is likely to have removed the evidence.

      The water levels

In the face of a materialising counter offensive did the Russians shut the sluice gates to brim the reservoir before blowing it?

I don’t think this thing is an AFV!

China does make AFVs, and exports them, but they look like this:

Apparently, seismometers in Romania detected a magnitude 1-2 seismic event, likely a quite large explosion at that dam at 2:54 AM Ukraine time [The dam was reported to have failed c. 3 AM].

According to Norway’s seismological institute, the blast occurred at 2:54 am local time, at a site whose coordinates correspond to the Kakhovka dam.

And, The NY Times is reporting that US spy satellites looking at infrared spectra detected a thermal flare at the dam consistent with a large explosion at about the same time. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/09/w...explosion.html

A senior Biden administration official says that U.S. spy satellites detected an explosion at the Kakhovka dam just before it collapsed, but American analysts still do not know who caused the dam’s destruction or how exactly it happened.

The official said that satellites equipped with infrared sensors detected a heat signature consistent with a major explosion just before the dam collapsed, unleashing massive floodwaters downstream.

American intelligence analysts suspect Russia was behind the dam’s destruction, the senior administration official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss operational details. But he added that U.S. spy agencies still do not have any solid evidence about who was responsible.

Engineering and munitions experts have said a deliberate explosion inside the Kakhovka dam, which is controlled by Russia, most likely caused its collapse on Tuesday. They added that structural failure or an attack from outside the dam were possible but less plausible explanations.

The administration official did not rule out the possibility that prior damage to the dam or mounting water pressure might have contributed to the collapse, but American officials believe the explosion, whether deliberate or accidental, was the likely trigger.

Experts had cautioned earlier this week that the available evidence was very limited, but they said that a blast in an enclosed space, with all of its energy applied against the structure around it, would do the most damage. Even then, they said, it would require hundreds of pounds of explosives, at least, to breach the dam.

An external detonation by a bomb or missile would exert only a fraction of its force against the dam, and would require an explosive many times larger to achieve a similar effect.
