Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

Designed for lightweight Japanese, not heavyweight Americans?
    At a mere (!) 196 lbs, I wouldn't dare sit on it.

I love it and I think it can handle the weight no problem.

I once designed a chair with a 1" glass back the entire chair dimensions were exactly that of a Windsor chair, except made out of concrete, steel & glass. It was shown at Fullscale gallery in NYC and at the opening I would just sit down and slam my back into the class back and watch everyone gasp

I don't think that's a good design for my fat ass (I mean for a grown man like me).

Beautiful. What are the joints at the seat/back?

Oh, you could make it work. Weld up two good hefty steel T-pieces, arms about a foot long, and hide 'em inside the joints. Better yet, two weldments with a vertical steel piece, a horizontal foot, and a bit sticking out into the seat. No problem. Wood's for appearance.

Seriously, if you're going to design something out of wood, consider the properties and limitations of the material. This is just self-indulgent showing off. (Mitter, mutter, grumble . . . )

                    Right, George?

and isn't every creation 'just showing off'?

If it were made of locust (iron wood or the like) - it might last a while, but considering I like to lean back (and am not 'zactly light), I can think of two diagonals that could fix that and look good.

and since he's already mixing curves and straights... flow the diagonals.

                    ah, well - looks good.

                    and yes, I am a heathen. (-:

                      Nope... it's not.

Pless - why would my head explode? Or was that a 'funny' request for feedback?

No. Or at least most of them have a better balance of showing off and respect for the laws of physics.

OTOH, Nakashima could probably make it work. More mortals, not so much.

Nakashima was an American, and a fairly solid guy from photos of him. I've seen quite a bit of his furniture and it's really solidly built. He spent most of his career in eastern Pennsylvania so he was not designing for small Japanese folks.
