          Re: Trump is Toast

Misguided, thoughtless, gullible, people are part of every nation and half the US population loves or tolerates Trump. It might have changed a bit since Jan 6th. Half the population of Britain wanted Brexit Half didn't. It seems most the half who didn't were the educated thoughtful considerate broad minded type. A lot of the pro Brexiteers seemed to be, in retrospect the type who would think Trump's ok-
There's a huge proportion of supporters of far right views in the Netherlands, France, Germany, , getting on for half the population I'd hazard a guess.
          Populist Nationalism.
The left and left of centre politics are strong here in Portugal. There is a conservative right of course, Catholic, still thinking Salazar was a good guy, still yearning for the return of the Monarchy, but maybe 20% or less.
Its all down to education. only 40 years ago youth were actively discouraged from further education. Leave school at 14 or even younger, go and work in the fields, wait for conscription, go and die in unwillable anti colonialist guerrilla wars for the benefit of the ruling rich elite who owned or controlled Mozambique , Angola, most of Portugal.
          Recipe for revolution.
And even if Trump is toast, he appears to be the type who probably couldn't care less. Unless he ends up doing porridge.
'Trumpism' though can only be mitigated by Education in it's broadest sense

                  Re: Trump is Toast

resurrecting the old thread to post a link to the Wall St Journal on the subject.......

The Wall Street Journal Pronounced The Death Of Trump's Political Career And Dumped Dirt On Its Grave: 'He Won't Win Another Election'

Despite Donald Trump’s inevitable impeachment acquittal thanks to all but seven Republican Senators refusing to convict the former president for inciting the deadly assault on the Capitol building following his “Stop the Steal” rally on January 6, The Wall Street Journal has declared the end of Trump’s political career. In a damning op-ed from the conservative-leaning paper, the Editorial Board grapples with the constitutional precedent for continuing to impeach Trump after he’s already left office, but when it comes to the evidence, Trump’s failure to stop the riot is a serious matter that won’t go away even after his acquittal.
“Mr. Trump’s Jan. 6 early-afternoon comments to House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy dismissing a plea to call off the rioters, as related second-hand by GOP Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, are further evidence of Mr. Trump’s dereliction,” the Editorial Board wrote. “As Mr. McConnell also noted, Senate acquittal does not absolve Mr. Trump of potential criminal or civil liability for actions he took in office.”
In perhaps an overly optimistic statement, the Editorial Board feels that Trump is toast as far as voters are concerned, and it behooves the GOP to recognize that fact sooner rather than later:

Mr. Trump may run again, but he won’t win another national election. He lost re-election before the events of Jan. 6, and as President his job approval never rose above 50%. He may go on a revenge campaign tour, or run as a third-party candidate, but all he will accomplish is to divide the center-right and elect Democrats. The GOP’s defeats in the two Jan. 5 Georgia Senate races proved that. The country is moving past the Trump Presidency, and the GOP will remain in the wilderness until it does too.

                    Re: Trump is Toast

How many Trump related predictions have come true?

I do think the tide is turning, as he will, hopefully, face numerous criminal charges and civil suits. Imagine if he is named in Dominion's suit and the Votemax suit. Several states appear to be investigating him.

At some point I would expect his great supporters will realize he did NOT walk to the Capital with them, and he did not pardon them.

Simple truth is, our next election is in 2022. GOP is working hard to disenfranchise people, which itself should be a crime, and we don't know how successful they'll be.

Great damage has been done to the US, and I'm not sure we recover. A LOT depends, IMO, on Biden getting stuff done soon. Success can change minds. People like success. They'll like vaccines coming faster. They'll like getting financial help.
"Banning books in spite of the 1st amendment, but refusing to regulate guns in spite of "well regulated militia' being in the 2nd amendment makes no sense. Can't think of anyone ever shot by a book

Well howdy folks. Time to resurrect this thread given its almost 12 months on and the subject of this thread is set to mount the stage in an attempt at gaining political capital.
If watching the My Pillow Man's recent TV appearance is anything to go by I think the Trump is Toast side of the coin is looking more like a sure bet, as I am led to believe from watching a recent Beau of the 5th video.

I think the US public may be on the cusp over the next month or three, of witnessing the demise of the Trump narrative.

Raffenberger has the evidence of attempted election tampering. The man who doesn't do email or text, intending to keep from leaving a trail of his perfidy, let himself be captured on "tape". I suspect he never imagined that some low-level lackey like Raffenberger would record him.

                            Re: Trump is Toast

Beau is quite incorrect. Americans don't give a flying fig about voting. If they did, many more would show up at the polls in mid-terms. In addition, the biggest reason Trump is a factor in our politics is that he appeals to the xenophobes - the culture war is, in essence, over the ascendency of non-caucasian citizenry. Most of the people who follow Trump/ism simply don't see non-whites as appropriate candidates for citizenship in _their_ country. Over and over the explainers, interviewers, poll takers come to that conclusion. Trumpist whites are, and have been made, afraid of non-whites, and are viscerally threatened by any effort to equalize the status of them in American society.

Quite naturally, it follows that those folks also believe that "those people" shouldn't be voting, since they shouldn't be citizens with the same rights and privileges as "real" Americans.

The historical precedent for this is very strong, so strong that it can be traced back to the very beginnings of white immigration to this continent. Our national history is replete with episodes of failure to dislodge this attitude of whites being supreme. We fought a civil war over it. White supremacy has been recognized as our national sickness for decades and possibly we are watching it becoming terminal right now.

I agree with Emily100%. I recall in 2015 a conversation I had with a customer I’d had friendly correspondence with for a year and the topics drifted around to politics when we met. She came right out and said that TFG and his family was more “American” than the Obama’s. I could not get my head around that statement. First that it made sense to her and the implications of that mindset but that one could almost say the silent part out loud.
Later a friend handed me the book The Unmaking of Freedom by Timothy Snyder which layed out the wave of nationalist movements in other countries and how TFG’s tactics mirrored other authoritarians.
TFG is out but we’re still in the woods.
