    Re: Absurd?

A local source is your hard drive. A remote source is something like Facebook or Flickr etc.

Presumably someone has helped the OP to understand how to post photos on the forum, aside from telling him that he must host them somewhere else online.

If not, here's how you do it:

Place your photo somewhere else online.

Determine the URL of your photo where it is online (carefully avoiding using the URL of the page your photo is residing on).

Copy the URL of your photo to your clipboard.

Return to the forum and click on the pale green square icon in the bar at the top of the message window where you wish to put the photo.

Choose remote source and paste the URL into the available window.

Unclick the little box below the URL line.

Click on OK or whatever it is and the photo should appear inside the message box.

    For more guidance, ask again.

          Re: Absurd?

I'll reiterate why WB doesn't host the photos: It would cost them thousands of dollars in server space + dramatically increased security concerns.

I post my pics @ PhotoBucket for free, When I want to show one, I right click on it (in Photobucket), choose copy, come back to my post here, click where I want it & press CTRL and V. Done.

No one will host pics linked to your personal computer: 1) security & 2) if your computer is not on & connected to the web, the pic won't show.

No one else uses Google Photo? Everything on your phone or computer (any device you choose with an internet connection) is automatically backed up to your Google account.

That's a completely unfair & inaccurate statement. Mainly - it has nothing to do with software. To a computer, a picture is simply another file. Thing is, they tend to be very big files. An average iPhone photo is about 2MB & good quality images get even bigger. Videos run in the GB size range. Storing all that data takes disk space - which means buying hard disks. On a server as is used for the forum, you cannot use a $300 1TB disk like you do in your own computer because it gets used so much harder. So - a 1TB drive which might hold a few hundred thousand pics or maybe 10,000 videos will cost $5K. These are guesses, as I don't know exactly what hardware they use.

This doesn't factor in more powerful security either. It's easy to check text that we type here, but scanning every picture (which is where many viruses are hidden) requires better security software & increased hardware capability - IOW more money.

Would you like WB to start charging us or putting in ads to cover that cost?

ETA: Maybe the folks complaining would like to cover the cost increases. Maybe not? Whichever, I'll say thank you to Scot & WB for hosting this all for free & shut up now.

                    Re: Absurd?

The problem with a photo hosting site, is I would have to make one specifically for WBF. With as many threats and internet digging as some members on here participate in, I would need a completely anonymous source to host the photos.

Now don't go saying that you guys do not threaten and intimidate offline......we have copious examples.

I post photos, often multiple photos, regularly, from my files, quickly and easily, on two other boat-related forums. Those other forums are free. You haven't got the whole story, Garret, or are merely ignoring the parts which do not fit your opinion.

I write web sites, I work with clients who host sites - so I do have a clue. I already said I don't know what WB has for hardware, but I do know that hosting sites is not cheap. I also know that making them bigger costs even more money. However, I said I was gonna shut up, so I will.

Those other forums might be free for you to use, but disk space to store the photos is not free. Someone is paying for it. Also bandwith to transmit the photos isn't free.

You must be really comfortable with Google selling all that stuff for advertising revenue and copyright infringement. Maybe you don't care about your privacy and the ownership of your digital data, but many do.

I don't belong to a single discussion board that doesn't require images be linked to an outside host. I suspect this went sticky because Scot has a sense of humor.
