  • Sailing with Parkinsons at 80

The following is a letter that I wrote to our local and greatest news outlet, Towndock.net. Graham Byrnes is a boat designer and friend of long standing who has the debilitating disease of Parkinsons. He still undertakes adventures that might cause lesser men pause. I am trying to post the story on the forum but am having problems with its size. Hopefully Keith Smith of Towndock can solve this problem and I can post the story and pictures soon.

I was glad to see the stories in TownDock.net about Graham. He gave a talk about a Pamlico group building a 20’ catamaran to race in the Ft Lauderdale to Virginia Beach ocean race in Winter 1988. I was busy building a retirement home for Liz and me but could not miss an opportunity to take part in such an effort. I volunteered and quickly made a day home at Graham and Carla’s in Vandemere so the house would have to wait for a few months.

My engineering training and woodworking skills were a great fit for this project. It quickly became a consuming effort for our team with the boat being finished and loaded on a trailer, pulled by our campervan at the last minute, to make it in time for the start on the beach in Ft Lauderdale. Graham is a great designer of boats that I am fortunate to have been associated with for building many boats over the years. Our ideas about boat design are closely matched so we have enjoyed a close relationship for these years. I have designed a fleet of small cruising powerboats that have found builders and cruisers around the world, including LIZ which is the boat now owned by TownDock.net and used by Keith in taking all the great pictures you see every day. While Graham’s focus has been mostly with sailboats, he had many successful ventures into powerboat design later.

Graham and his partners in the shop near Vandemere still produce and market designs and building kits that attract a broad range of buyers and builders. Parkinson’s has definitely caused life changes but he still finds time and interest in using his skills to get on our local waters for pleasure and to promote worthy causes such as the one he now undertakes. Pamlico County is privileged to have citizens such as Graham who contribute to our well being and he is certainly one of those that I am proud to know.

Actually, if you click on the above links, they will take you to the whole story, which I'm sure you will find interesting. I discovered this by accidentally clicking on everything I could find. The fundraiser is one of the rare ones that I am contributing to these days because of the constant begging on my email.

I helped build a 32' S&S design suited for a couple, one of whom had Parkinson's. The wife, a doctor, was determined to extend their enjoyment of cruising Nantucket Sound for as long as it would be possible. They were an amazing couple and their dedication to each other was truly admirable.
For the most part experience is making the same mistakes over and over again, only with greater confidence.

Graham is still out there in much better weather now that the storm has gone down and the sun has decided to shine. I will follow up with Graham when we can get together. Some of the path is out of phone range.

Graham is indeed a cool guy. I drew this from a photo of him sailing around in Carlita.

I am minded of Peter Sibley, determined to build, launch and sail his boat before his brain tumour took him.

He got in one good sail. The second and last was too much for him sadly.

"He got in one good sail". That is not nothing, which I suspect Peter knew and was happy in.

We never know how much time will be needed to do the things that we intend. Liz and me are fortunate that Keith still takes us out on the water fairly often with LIZ and always haves me drive which is still possible even if other things required to operate a boat are not.

Nice to see Tom Lathrop. I don't think he's posted here in awhile.

I was thinking of giving up boxing because of the expense. I just made up my mind to go on Friday. The program I do is Rock steady on steroids. www.fearlessfamilymartialarts.com

It's interesting that they give mice epoxy to imitate Parkinson's.
