  • Roger Barnes Latest Videos

Maybe there's been a thread on Roger's work here already, but I don't remember seeing one. So I figured, since I'm always happy to see Roger release a new video, I'd start linking them here. Might be able to introduce a few people to his channel--good stuff. Dinghy cruising in a Francois Vivier "Ilur" design.

His latest episode takes him to Venice! Might get my wife to watch this one as a "travel video" (actually, Roger's videos are the only sailing videos she'll watch happily).

Lots more on his YouTube channel if you're not already aware. Enjoy!

Literally wrote the book on dinghy cruising. I love watching him and his boat. Keeps the fires alive, specially coming into winter. Good stuff.

I’ve been sharing his videos around simply to show a different side of sailing than “my wife and I live in this 40+ foot catamaran” YouTube channels.

I had a project that took me to the region 8 years ago. I worked with a local engineer from Padova who sculled a boat on the lagoon in the traditional, stand-up, facing-forward style, as spotted in one of the brief clips in this video. He said he learned the technique years ago from an 80-year-old retired waterman who had done it for a living of some sort, before all the working craft were motorized.

I lived near Venice for a number of years and spent many happy days rowing around the places he visited. I think his video captured the wonderful atmosphere of the place very well, especially Chioggia. Just a shame he missed the amazing and very rustic waterside fish restaurant at Malamocco...

Many moons ago (1971) I did a 6-week practical work stint in Mestre and really got to love Venice but had no opportunity to engage in boating there, so Roger's video really interested both me and my wife, who spent the time exploring the town and learning Italian the hard way. We watched it on the television and quite enjoyed it. Roger's videos are getting better and better.

Tom liked that one so well he posted it twice? In post #3 and in post #9.

Roger Barnes is my favorite. His Dinghy Cruising Companion is the second sailing book I bought ... Right after Jagular Goes Everywhere. (It's true!) Now I just need to start on the boat.

Well, good luck--you're going to need it if you're using my book as any kind of how-to guide...

Anyone who enjoys Roger Barnes' films may well enjoy Paul's videos "Sailing Kate Louise", a Stornaway 18 which he sails around Sydney and its environs. There's overnight camping and some questionable culinary segments as well.

There are a fair few nods in the direction of Roger Barnes in Paul's videos.
Kate Louise is a lovely little boat.
