I've subscribed to that one. Enrico Franconi's videos of cruising in a Goat Island Skiff in Italy and France are also interesting.

I've been completely failing to update this thread, but Roger has a new video out from a few days ago:

Lots of sailing in this one.

Always enjoy Roger's videos. I've managed to find the vest he wears https://www.coastwatersports.com/bal...d-p-15963.html
I know it isn't USCG approved but that doesn't mean it isn't good (I remember the debates over US DOT approved motorcycle helmets versus EC) may have to try ordering one.

Another video from Roger Barnes--a long one, and (looks like) the first part of a multi-parter. Haven't watched it yet, but looking forward to it!

          Enjoy.

            Re: Roger Barnes Latest Videos

I was very happy to see Roger back at it wih his videos. His editing style is quite satisfying to me for some reason. Snippets of the experience and then a voice-over with the chart to show what they were doing at the time.

And this time he uses that great Opinel pocket knife of his as the pointer on the chart! (I might need to get one of those for my little boat when it splashes.)

I'm a big fan of Roger and his style of video too. I already liked British accents, but I really like the way he speaks slowly doing the voice-overs, and we still hear the sounds surrounding his boat at the same time. I also like that he tells about what he is eating/preparing (as other dinghy cruisers seem to do too), and also when he gets philosophical.

I re-watch his vids often, or should I say listen to them, as I drive.

                      And:

So interesting to see his videos, where there are groups of dinghy cruisers (including women), and lots of wooden boats around. On the Great Lakes, I usually feel like the only one out there doing this stuff. I can count the number of small wooden boats out camp cruising in my waters on the thumbs of one hand--and that's just when I manage to drag my brother along.

OK, I did run into a half-dozen small wooden boats in Killarney once, when Howard Rice was leading a group cruise there. But really, that's it.

We’ll have to remedy that when you’re back. I know at least a few folks who might be convinced to have a Wisconsin mess about in wooden boats. And I’ll try to convince a few more to build sail and oar boats before next summer.

That would be great, really. Now that I think about it, there was a very informal "race" at the Turtle-Flambeau some years back, with maybe 5-6 small boats sailing around Big Island (around a 10-mile circle). My brother and I were there in our boats and watched them go sailing by, too far away to join in.

Those flowages would be great for a messabout for people who don't mind rustic camping. The group campsites are reservable, so a messabout organizer could grab a campsite and people would be guaranteed a spot to camp so everyone wouldn't have to find their own. That would be a good way of keeping everyone together.

Then depending on morning winds, people could choose a route for the day and return. I've even thought some kind of "follow-the-clues" treasure map/puzzle race would be a blast. Or maybe just award points per # of destinations reached that day (proven with a photo if need be), with more points given for destinations that look harder to reach that day.

Or just everyone show up and do whatever they want during the day--alone, together, whatever. Could be lots of fun.

Well, you could do that. But I wouldn't use GPS for my version. I was thinking more clues/puzzles you'd have to solve to know where to go next, OR a race that required a certain # of miles to be traveled, with bonus points along the way for stopping at specific locations marked on the chart--the harder to get to, the more points for that location. Or something.

To be honest, I'm probably too lazy to put something like that together. But I could imagine it being fun. The typical messabout crowd--at least in the Midwest--tends to be less about sailing, though, and more about walking up and down the beach looking at each others' boats and talking.

Not having engaged in it myself I didn't realize Geocaching revolved around the use of GPS. I always thought it was more of a "follow the clues" scavenger hunt. Learned something new today!
