I still daydream about Barkley Sound. Was it really that long ago? I've put a lot of quality miles under my little boats since then, but cruising the Broken Group was just the best.

I know what you mean--jeez, it's been 6 years since my first trip in my Alaska, which still kind of seems like the "new boat" for me. Six years and not nearly enough time afloat on long trips.

The next time I abandon gainful employment I'm going to spend a few months aboard and see where I can get to. I've got some ideas for that, and I feel like "now or never" is getting closer every year.

Dont blink, Tim. The next 10 years goes by even faster.

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

Man, I can't believe this was more than 10 years ago.

It was two boats ago for me, as well as being pre-afib.

I'm still the oldest of the four of us, I find.

Reminds me of something I spotted on the web the other day:

Almost 3 boats ago, if you count ketch Hornpipe and yawl Hornpipe as different boats.

As far as still being the oldest of the bunch, that's a good thing. There's only one way you could manage to let someone else pass you by.

I'm acutely aware of that these days, having lost a number of friends and acquaintances of similar age. Believe me, I am grateful for it every day, but I reserve the right to grouse about age-related infirmities.

yes, what good is being old if you cannot bitch about your infirmities!?

Ah Kevin ;that touches on my own Theory of Ageing .For a one year old a year is a lifetime . A 10 year old experiences a day to be as long as a 70 year old experiences a week to be ( explaining the impatience of youth) . Your theory is scarier .

10 years ago, wow. I still think about this thread a lot actually.

Out of all of my trips to various locations, I think Barkley Sound might be the best. The further inland you are, the more protected it gets. And as you approach the ocean, you can really feel the energy. Sailing Big Food offshore in the Pacific Ocean swells remains a personal highlight of mine.

Hvalsoe and I went for a hike last weekend and were agreeing that it's probably time to try to get back out there. Toquart isn't really an option, but we could leave out of Ucluelet.

Once I have the Bartender up and running, I'd be tempted to trailer up to Port Alberni and then run up the channel to the Broken Group. I could also see leaving from Ballard, checking in with customs at Victoria/Sooke, then hustling up the coast of the Vancouver Island all the way to the Broken Group. All good plans to consider.

                        • Being a bit constrained by what I can physically do at present, I have been thinking about and going over past trips. The other day I drew this impression of the boats during a morning low tide while we waited for the fog to lift during this trip.

                            • Here, we’re in the same positions on the beach as the photo above of our boats.

                              Left to right:
                              Bandwagon / Eric
                              Hornpipe / Alex
                              Big Food / Tim
                              Rowan / James

It’s also interesting that two of us (Alex and I) have replaced our boats, and a third (Eric) is in process of doing the same (moving from a Hvalsoe 16 to Hvalsoe 18, eventually to be launched?). The noted conservative among us, James, remains stuck with his ancient Sooty Tern.
