Hi,

Have read nearly all of Walt Simmons's books and often check out the Duck Trap site. Like the way he writes and he sure builds beautiful boats. After I finish the rip, strip, and row cosine wherry would like to build a Simmons boat using glue lap construction. Don't see his name mentioned often on the forum.

Anybody out there had any experiences with his designs, plans etc?
I just realized that I made the one big mistake of not running a search, but will do that now and look for any answers you folks might have as well.

Can't say that I've read anything of his outside of the magazine or built any of his boats, but the Newfoundland Trap Skiff that was featured in WB 26 is a real looker.

This is a model of the boat mentioned in issue 26, without the decks. Always wanted to build it for real.

Bob, I too have all Walt's books, well almost and like his writing. I've talked with him on several subjects and find him very easy to talk to and imformative. I'm planning to build the Newfoundland Trap Skif at some point but don't have the plans yet. I'm making a trip to Maine in May and plan to stop by there. I have purchased several of his tools as well and have always been happy with them. I think Ros here on the forum may be from the same town, could have that wrong.

You're asking me to remember what I did twenty years ago
The planks are card stock strips that were glued at the laps over an egg crate form made from the lines in the Issue 26 article. The ribs and internals were placed later.

Probably 15 years ago I bought a nice set of pintles and gudgeons from Duck Trap. I've always been happy with the hardware. They're probably worth a holler.

I built his Harbor Skiff 5 yrs ago. 12ft glued lap. The plans were pretty good, easy enough to follow.
