  • Good resource for learning sailing a new rig?

Looking to learn some techniques for sailing with a mizzen, google surprisingly doesn't have a lot of resources being returned. Anyone know good books on sailing with a gaff yawl? Hoping to learn some proficiencies with it.

When I had a small schooner, I learned by sailing it. With the sails spread out along the hull --- like a yawl-- I found sheeting in the main or let it out would change the balance of the boat. Sheet in to head up and let the main out to fall off. Suspect the same is true for a yawl

What's not on a boat costs nothing, weighs nothing, and can't break

You will learn by actual sailing and not by watching videos. But I'm sure you know that. That said, some instruction/guidance can go a long way. You might inquire at the Center for Wooden Boats in Seattle. They have quite a few instructors and one, or more, may be proficient in just the kind of rig you have.

I have sailed one gaff yawl and it was an extreme pre- or immediately post WWI.
        http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthre...ification-post!

It was very hard to trim the mizzen, especially since the mast is so problematically stayed. We often pulled the mizzen boom to weather just to get the upper 2/3rds of the sail to draw usefully.

Generally I trimmed from forward first, getting the jib and staysail nice, then the main, and lastly the mizzen, often going twice as it was so easy to overtrim the headsails.

Experiment and do not fear being a little off the wind compared to modern yawls, which are really sloops with a dangle anyway.

Eun mara, 20 ft Loa almost 7 ft beam. I completely understand nothing beats experience but I can’t get experience for maneuvers I don’t know exist. Got some work to get the mizzen sail trimmed right .

I dunno about books but I found this article very helpful when learning to handle my cat-yawl

That spiral lashing on the mizzen luff is a problem as it makes setting, striking, and trimming ineffective.

If you start at the top grommet where the luff line will pull against the halyard -
go through the second grommet from port, third from starboard, fourth from port

blah, my words are getting tangled but someone here will post a drawing.

Just invite the WB forum to come for a sail with you. You might learn something, in any case you'll certainly have a good time.

I've certainly fine tuned my sailing skills most effectively when going out with experienced hands. The books and videos just don't cut it.

How many South Sounders we have around here? Quartermaster Harbor messabout? I've never been but it is on my list of places to anchor out.

I’m quite interested in what you mean here, the spiral lashing has made raising the sail a bit of a pain but it sure looks nice lol

                              Thank you stromborg.

Once lashed, set sail with reasonably tight luff, and then fiddle the lashing till the tension at each grommet is nice and even. Tie off at the tack with a bight and a tautline hitch through the bottom grommet. You can use this for fine adjustment.
