  • Wooden & Traditional Boats in the Wild?

I notice that I see a lot more wooden boats in New England than I do elsewhere. No doubt there are a lot of factors owing to this: climate, hauling the boat out for almost half the year, affordable yachting, available knowledge and resources, cultural awareness and appreciation, just the start of what is probably a rather extensive list.

So with the caveat that I haven't done any substantial cruising; I've done a few hops down the eastern US seaboard, sailed to Panama, did some sailing on the west coast on traditionally rigged ships and such, did the Outward Bound thing, but I'm not fully aware of a great many traditionally rigged and/or wooden vessels that actively cruise. When I see one it grabs my full attention.

Are there traditional boats that manage to go cruising?

Does this choice of vessel change the cruising pattern or how a person cruises? I'm curious to know if anyone here has experience with cruising on beautiful wood boats (the Pardeys and Taliesin come to mind) or other traditionally rigged vessels; if there is indeed a secret network of "classic cruisers" I am unaware of then I want to learn the secret handshake!

I haven't crossed any oceans in my 39' wooden ketch. I have sailed to and from Florida and New England.

            ...
One of the great things about this forum is that we don't all have to accumulate the same scar tissue.
