  • Ken Bassett's Runabout -RASCAL

With the retirement of both Ken and his Rascal Runabout, does anyone know a source for Plans?

As far as I know they are still available thru WoodenBoat magazine. Doug
Oops. I just looked and when you look at the listing it says they are no longer available. Not sure why they don't just remove the listing.

We're keeping the listing so that when folks search, they don't simply come up empty. Instead they learn plans are no longer offered for sale.

Eventually we will remove the listing, but Ken no longer wanting to have the plans sold is a fairly recent thing.

That is a shame as it is a great plan. I love mine.

Thank you for your comments. I’ll see if I can dust off my naval architecture degree and come up with something in the same dimensions. I actually don’t love the vertical bow profile, so I’ll have the opportunity to be creative.

For many would-be builders, the availability of support from the designer is important.

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

Does anyone have a used set of plans for Rascal that I could possibly purchase. I would be willing to pay royalties to Ken Bennet or his estate if that is proper and possible?

Actually, although they do still list the plans on WoodenBoat's web site, they no longer sell them. Doug

Rascal's bow profile is a feature that I suspect Ken might object to being changed. It is one that I like on many designs and use on a couple of my own. It is certainly harder to get right and harder to build as planking in this area wants to break if the builder does not know how to do the work and how and where a break forms. No boat design is perfect but Rascal comes as close as any and is beautiful as Ken did it.
