  • Phinisi Boat Wooden Mast Repair rotten wood

Hello, we have a phinisi boat and looking for advice. Near the top of the mast we have discover a small crack and section of wood rot. The damaged section appears to be about 2 inches deep and 10 inches long.

I have attached a picture of the damaged section. Can anyone advise on the best way to address this problem? Is this a major safety hazard that would cause the mast to collapse? We do not actually use any sails on the boat, but are considering our options to try to repair it or replace the mast. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you

The picture should be rotated 90 degrees or viewed verticle. This is the top section. If the main mast where it attaches to the upper booms

        Welcome to the forum.
As to safety, it looks small now but if not correctly repaired will weaken the mast ant the hounds, so that rolling in a seaway might bring down the topmast
First off, you do realize that the mast has to come out?

Strip off the iron work and scrape the paint down to clean wood at leas 30cm/one foot past the evidence of the rot.
Then post photos of what you find, so that we have a better idea of the extent of the problem. What wood is the mast built out of?
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

Those jibs ARE sails, and they stress a rig more than sails that would be behind the mast.
