  • Identify this wooden boat? Thanks

I don't know what this is, a widow in my church has it. Unfinished, don't know what it is, can you tell me what it is or a name?

    No plans found yet.

Has a small keel, has sails, but no mast to be found.

Seems to have a shaft hole for a propeller, but no engine or sign of mount for engine (location).

Just want to identify it, not being worked on, been sitting at least 4 years.

Looks like there was an old powerboat skeg and a kind of plywood dory was built on it, towards being a power dory.

I suspect that it might be one of the dories from John Gardner's books.

Be nice to know the beam and length. Definitely a dory with a keel from some other boat.

Whatever it is, that transom is a work of art!

Somewhat odd for this dory hull to be built on top of that old keel/skeg.
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.

Possibly a variant of a St. Pierre power dory.

There are three versions in The Dory Book by John Gardner.

Many years ago, there was a guy based on the Texas coast who sold plans. I recall that a number of the plans were plywood dories and included some St. Pierre style boats. Might be one of those plans.

Is it around 26 or so feet overall length?

I want to say thank you for all the replies, I will read every one. Keep them coming, I will look up the things you all say and eventually figure it out. I didn't know the man that built it, but he was a Mensa member and maybe was tying two ideas into his plan for a special boat. I never got to meet him, but it appears he did great work many projects, unfortunately, time ran out before he finished one of his dreams.
It is about that length, if it makes a difference, I will get measurements in the next couple weeks. I travel regularly and I'm always juggling tasks. I surely appreciate any and all comments.

Yup, Lots of robust frames and a thick transom. Whoever started this knew what they were about. Well worth saving and finishing.

Thanks to all who offered up their thoughts. Your time is much appreciated!

The plans were found, yay! It's a 23' powered sailing Dory. Designed by Jay R. Benford in 1989, from St Michaels Maryland. Boat wasn't started that long ago, maybe 10 years, I can find out if someone wants to know.

Pics of plans for knowledge to all, who might be curious? I'm not a craftsman, but I appreciate the hours all those boat craftsmen put in to build their dreams.

You all have a great day on the water!

                      Thanks much!
