  • Determining the boom height

As mentioned in a previous post I am back at work on my gunter sloop rig IO Arctic Tern.

After 6-7+ years away from the project, 3 moves and a divorce, a couple of the blue prints are missing, and the others are faded. Using a magnifying glass I have been able to get most of the information for setting up the rig, and when combined with the equipment list provided by Classic Marine, am only missing one critical piece of information.

How high up on the mast does the boom go? I cant find that missing piece of information anywhere. Anyone have any clues?

    Thanks

    Russell

    Re: Determining the boom height

If you google oughtred arctic tern and click "images" there are many pics of builds with several different sail plans; you should be able to get a pretty good idea. There are also pics of some of Oughtred's drawings; you could figure out a scale and measure...

That is what I do, insert the image file into a 2D CAD session, scale the image so that a known feature is 1:1, and then take dims in CAD.
Which plan are you using? Pic below is from Sailrite.

I want to thank both of you. Scaling off the drawing way my best guess.

Spot, thank you so much for taking the time to do that, unfortunately I am building a gunter rig not a gaff rig, but I can use my drafting skill from the 8th grade (1968) to come up with a good estimate.

Thanks again to both of you.

You are welcome. It does not take long; if you need it done to a different image that you have, just ask..
I did a few years on the drafting board in school, on the job it's all been CAD.
Does the boom hang at a fixed height with the intended rig? I have nothing with 4 cornered sails.
