  • White Cedar Ulua Sailing Canoe Build

I am building a Gary Dierking-designed Ulua outrigger sailing canoe. This is my second cedar-strip boat build, the first being a Nymph solo canoe. For that one, I used Western Red Cedar from the lumber store. This time around, I decided to go with Eastern White Cedar, which we have on our property on eastern lake Superior, in Canada. This decision was mostly based on cost, but also for the experience of getting lumber right from the source.

I will share my progress as the project continues and hope to get advice from the group members at the various stages. I have included pics of the progress to date here.

Stage 1: Harvesting & initial stages of milling

    2 - limbing.jpg
Dropping & Limbing: Three EWC's were chosen. Projected board length: 22'

    4 - milling.jpg
Chainsaw mill: Thickness relative to maximum circular saw blade depth.

    5 - chainsaw straight edge.jpg
Straight edge: A different chainsaw guide used for vertical cuts.

    8 - circular saw boards.jpg
Smaller boards: 1" wide boards cut with circular saw, to speed up drying time.

    9 - dry stack.jpg
Drying: Boards stacked with spacers in garage. Heater and fans used. Should take a couple weeks.

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

Stage 2: Forms, strongback & milling strips

1/4” strips are ripped and put through the thickness planner. They are then routed with a bead and cove.

Forms are lofted onto large paper, glued to plywood, and cut out.

My strongback is rebuilt and lengthened to 20’. Forms are mounted and leveled, with help from the laser level.

Inner stems are cut and temporarily mounted. The first strip goes on!

With two strips attached to stems at both ends, another alignment is performed (to the best of my abilities!)

          More to come…

Quite the undertaking Dave (what's the Lepage's for?)!

I used it to glue the strips to the stems. I will also use it to glue the strips together.

                Planking is almost done.
