Re: How much does a free boat cost?- Part 2

The new fuel pump arrived during the week, so I fitted that on Saturday morning. $450
Suzi started straight up and idled nicely.
I jumped in the water with a 4" scraper and removed a heap of weed and mussels from the waterline, the rudder and as far down as I could reach from the surface.
It was COLD without a wetsuit, but she was clean enough for a sail.
A potential buyer came out with me for a gentle lap around Evans Bay, she and her 2 boys were very happy.
    I also;
fitted the second halyard winch on the cabintop along with 2 camcleats for these. $100 for cleats.
filled the stove with meths and boiled water for coffee,
filled the water tanks and replaced the supply line to the tap $10
I quickly stripped apart and cleaned sticky gunk out of one of the Maxwell sheet winches while waiting for the buyer to arrive.
It was better but these winches are completely gummed up and need a good scrub in degreaser before reassembling.
I'm booked to come out of the water for full scrape and antifoul this weekend.

    Total spend so far $563

Re: How much does a free boat cost?- Part 2

The liftout of the water went well.
I found some osmosis in the hull, but anyone who I've mentioned it to says "It's 50 years old, of course it's got some osmosis".
After the antifoul sanding to prep for paint I scraped out about 50 blisters that were either open and weeping or spongy.
Anything hard still can wait until the next time out. This is apparently the standard way of dealing with osmosis with a boat not worth the cost of the full strip/dry/epoxy treatment.
The blisters got left overnight to dry out a bit then sluiced a few times with epoxy thinners.
I then ground them out a bit more to get to some properly bonded gelcoat.
I then filled them all with west and colloidal silica, sanded, and primed with primocon.
After work today I will get a coat of antifoul on it and hopefully ready to go back in the water on Saturday.
The second Maxwell winch was a ball of corrosion under the top.
I've got it apart and cleaned up, but the spin on top to hold it together didn't survive.
There are no parts for these things that I could find, so I'm going to just remove them and blank the holes.
There is a pair of Murray winches also fitted that can do the job, so I leave it at that.

Re: How much does a free boat cost?- Part 2

I masked up and got the first coat of antifoul on today.
        Looking good!

I'll get 2 coats of antifoul from a 4 litre tin that I'd used to touch up Haumuri's rudder repair with.

The old girl in the background has run out of lives unfortunately.
She is 100 years old probably, 2 skin Kauri, riveted, with stringers and no frames in the classic kiwi style.
The hull had a leak, but appears to have no rot.
She has been a liveaboard for probably 10 years, but abandoned in the marina.
A $1 reserve online auction did not find any takers, so she is being cut up.

Upstart is moving to a swing mooring in Evans Bay, so I needed a dinghy to lean up against the fence.
$151 got a wooden optimist in need of paint, but has all the gear to sail her.
I'll use an air-cooled 3 Hp 4 stroke outboard I have to get out to Upstart with her.

Part used tin of antifoul and painting supplies $220 estimated.
Dinghy won't go with boat, so not added to count.
        Total spend to date $783

Re: How much does a free boat cost?- Part 2

There was no work on Upstart, but I got the hull sanded of the Opti.
I was lead to believe it had been stripped and glassed.
It is actually varnish, so I've sanded it back to key it and will paint with single pack finish.
It took about an hour, and is sound with some fill in the corners to fix some dings. Mahogany plywood by the look.

As you can see at the bow, I started to sand all the varnish off so I could use 2 pack primer. I decided the boat just isn't worth it.
The paint is somewhere on that shelving.

That is the best looking free boat I've ever seen!
            Enjoy!
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.

That's the best free boat I've seen, well done!
We had an old opti for the kids. I put glass tape along all chines/corners which helped its longevity a lot.
There is nothing quite as permanent as a good temporary repair.

The Reactor got the second coat of antifoul on tonight.
It rained 30 minutes later, luckily antifoul isn't water soluble!
The opti got a sand of the filler I put in some low spots last night and a coat of primer on it.
It came up pretty fair for a roughy!

I'll give it a second coat then a quick sand to knock the highs off before top coating.
I'm moving onto the swing mooring at the end of the month, so will need to be ready.

Oh yeah, ready to go back in the water. I polished the hull this morning, which was quite dirty from road grime while parked up next to a busy road IMG20230520083407.jpg

The deck and cabin got a scrub with Oxalic acid.
The teak trim came up great, but not much difference to the gelcoat.
I ended up using a cleaner/polish to cut through the oxide layer of the gelcoat.
While still 50 years old, it is clean and with much more even colour.

What a pretty little boat! Thanks for sharing with us-always gratifying seeing an old boat brought back to life.

I finally got the interior cleaned and took photo's for listing for sale.
Again, it came up pretty well.
