          Hi All,
Finally managed to glue in the aft bulkhead yesterday after lots of trial fitting, marking of timbers, masking etc....................... i did finally remember to seal & paint the inside of the bulkhead before gluing it in place.
Next step will be to fillet the inside joint, and then I can glue on the deck which is all cut, sealed & painted ready to go. I have ordered Dynel cloth to put on the deck - has anyone tried painting the applied dynel cloth to creat a "canvas" style finish on their decks? I watched the OCH videos yesterday again and they showed this working though its obviously dependant on one getting just the right amount of epoxy through the dynel and am wondering if my skills could achieve this - is the job easy?

I am planning to go & visit Ian Oughtred when we are in Skye next month - wonder what he'll think of my photos?

I didn't use dynel on my boat, just a glass cloth. On areas where I didn't want to achieve a smooth surface I just took my time applying the epoxy. I found it too easy to think there isn't enough on there to wet it out, when it just needs more time.

When I built my CY I boxed in the mizzen mast and led a small (8mm copper) pipe to the cockpit sole to drain any water.

                Nice work and progress, Neil.
Check out post #1075 onwards on page 31 of my “Believed abstraction” thread. It will explain in some detail the application and painting process of the Dynel cloth to achieve the canvas look.

                Cheers,
                Mike.

Some nice progress there Neil. As for a canvas look, I glassed the bottom on my Ptarmigan and applied peel ply. When peeled off it leaves the fabric weave pattern in the resin and it's a suitable surface for re-coating so there's no need to sand it. It would give a nice fabric finish if you don't use too much paint. Just a thought.

Say hi to Iain for me, I still owe him a scotch for building a second Tammie Norrie from the plans without permission, albeit a 1/8th scale one!

If you are building a Caledonia Yawl this might be relevant. The forward deck (I am fitting out with both aft & fwd decks) has 4 beams under it. I placed the aft most beam at a point midway between station 2 and station 3 because the mould plans provide the shape of the floor at station 2 1/2 - so I assumed the beam and floor would be midway. Wrong, the beam needs to be 12 inches aft of station 2 which is not midway. Fortunately I had not actually glued the beam in, just its supports which are U shaped and glued onto plank 6. Issue is now being corrected but it did involve a bit of trimming the beam, cutting new beam supports etc...... The aft beams, bulkhead and deck are in, and filleted (not sanded yet) Silly me !!

As an aside we are touring in Scotland just now - and guess who I had a beer with in Portree yesterday - yes, the man himself. Very interesting and friendly man, was great to meet him at long last.

Who remembers this TV show? It's moored at Inverary
