  • Re: Another Hartley TS16 restore.

I had checked the fore and aft fairness of the cabin beams with a plywood batten, and it seemed fine. However a sheet of ply doesn't bend like a plywood batten. The curve from the foremost beam to the cabin front is just a bit to extreme.
    The gap, inside.jpg

    Gap outside.jpg
It's odd because the new cabin sides and front piece are exactly the same as the old.
So obviously I am going to have to build it up, and I have a couple of ideas on that.
First off thought I cut a template for the correct curve.

      Ahh, bummer.
That insert is what i would do too.

You could scribe the line in the back of the batten now, add it to the top and glass in place.
How will you finish the cabin - bright or paint. Fairing filler and paint will hide all.
It's all fun and games until Darth Vader comes.

Inside is varnish. My plan is to redo the batten in good ply with the bottom edge following the same curve. I will build up the back edge to meet the cabin top. I did try shaving a bit off the tops of the beams, and it did help reduce the gap but not enough.

The bottom curve of the front piece of the companionway way lining needed cleaning up a bit. So I thought I'll do a 6mm plywood template, screw it to the underside of the piece and run it across the router table. It will look great....um no.
The locking lever on the router height adjustment came undone and it gouged the piece.
I made a new piece and very carefully cut the curve with the jigsaw.

All the companionway framing is glued in now.

A very fiddly job fitting the cockpit sole. I had to be in 4 pieces for two reasons. (A) To fit in around the centerboard case, and (B) I only had one full sheet of ply and the offcut from the 2nd sheet to play with.

Of course, I still have offcuts, and I actually have enough in a long length to do the cockpit coamings. I just have to decide how I want them to look.

I misunderstood what you were saying there, and it's a good idea.
My plan had been to do a decorative piece across the front of the cabin.

Dragon plywood. I've only found this recently. What I have been buying has varied in quality and it has often splintered when using a jigsaw.
The Dragon ply cuts fairly cleanly and the veneers appear to be good quality.
                Pink Marine Plywood BS1088

Pacific Maple, Red Meranti, Luan, Philippines Mahogany, Luaun.

This plywood used to be called Pacific Maple Marine Ply. That is another name for Meranti or the scientific name is Shorea sp. There are about 24 species within the Shorea genus which are called Meranti. Only some of those are red or pink in colour. It is a tropical hardwood, it is considered to be "moderately durable, fairly short grained of moderate density and often has a very attractive colour and grain. . Pacific Maple is also known as Philippines Mahogany, Luan and Luaun. When made into plywood, it is usually significantly lighter than Hoop Pine and sometimes almost as light as Gaboon. This varies according to exactly which subspecies of Shorea was used for the veneers in the marine plywood.
Due to over logging, the supplies of legal Shorea sp logs have become very limited. Very little is available from the Philippines, Indonesia, PNG or Malaysia. What we are selling comes from Indonesia. Our importer assures us that it is they only buy from sources which can satisfy them that the logs are legally obtained.
Good quality imported marine plywood is often difficult to obtain, how-ever this Red Meranti plywood from Indonesia seems to be quite good in quality. We rememeber the fabulous Wyang Pacific Maple which spolit us all, happily, this plywood seems to be approaching that standard. The Dragon brand has been applied to the quality plywood from the PT. Sumber Mas Indah company, a family run plywood mill. Until now, most of its marine plywood output has gone to Japan, the United States, Mexico, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan and Europe.

Interesting to know Gary, I’ve not come across Dragon Plywood before. You may be already aware from previous threads but be aware that anything stamped with BS1088 in Australia means nothing as there is no regulation/management of BS1088 (or any other British Standards) in Australia - at least in regards to plywood anyway. It is used solely as a marketing gimmick for plywood imports to Australia and so is a worthless stamp for any purpose of assessing the quality of a plywood product here. Only AS/NZS (standards) are regulated in regards to Australian plywood quality management.

Thanks Greg, I'll keep that in mind. It's still the best ply I've seen in a long time. The blurb I quoted is from the Boatcraft Pacific's website.

I've gone with the "decorative piece", hopefully, it will all make sense soon.

I was going to get the cabin top on today, and it's all prepped to go on...but I sort of ran out of puff.
So I cut the coamings for the aft locker hatch instead.

The Bruynzeel ply I used for my dodger was stamped BS1088. The BS has a very particular meaning for me now.

The aft locker - did ya think of lining it with some styrofoam and facing with some 6mm ply epoxied in, by way of a cool box?
I did something similar ages ago. I used styrofoam from some boxes we had around. It was amazingly efficient at keeping things cool.
