Selway Fisher Clyde 18

I have built a couple of boats before, a Selway Fisher Highlander 11 and a 7 strake Caledonia Yawl. I took the notion to build another boat - this time a simple motorboat. Something that can be built in my garage, towed easily so I can winter the boat at home. I want to be able to take 4 for day sails with the odd overnight for 2. It had to have shelter from the rain and a self draining cockpit. I have no desire for huge speed (or fuel bills!) so motoring with an outboard in the 25-40hp range.

I looked at lots of designs, but none ticked all of the boxes, although there is some lovely designs out there. I spoke to Paul Fisher about what I was looking for and he came up with the Clyde 18. https://www.selway-fisher.com/Mc1620.htm#CLYDE

I started in April, and have got the strongback made up, frames cut out, timbers added and the central spine glued up. I've got photos on my phone - I just need to work out the best way to put them up here. I'll keep posting photos as I make progress.

Has self draining cockpit and overnight shelter, works for me! How to attach plywood to plywood frames? Wood frames will hold screws/nails well.....plywood frame maybe not so much ...??

plywood to plywood" tape and epoxy, easy peasy and strong like bull....

Each frame has 100x35mm timbers half checked around the perimeter, apart from the transom which is 100x50mm.

I dont plan on using many screws, the CY I built had no screws or bolts and held fine. I'm of the belief that a few screws won't hold a badly glued joint, though I know that's a hotly debated topic!

Paul has drawn the plans for either lots of epoxy and less woodwork, or less epoxy and a bit more woodwork. I've chosen the latter...

I remember the last build and it worked out well.If anybody understands the concept of stress and applies it to epoxy joints with adequate bonding area,screws are definitely second best.

The framing is Douglas fir. I've cut the frames so the join on the frames that need 2 sheets is on the centreline. I've added a ply doubler underneath the pile of weights!

The outboard beam is a 175mmx50mm lump of iroko. The central spine runs up to the top of the beam, and I'll epoxy some more iroko below the beam, either side of the girder. This will take the lower bolts of the outboard.

On the transom I've cut the notches for the intermediate floor stringers. The ply transom (2x12mm) doesn't have the notches so that these stringers sit nice and flush. I'm planking using single 9mm. Without these stringers the plans show 2x6mm, but I'd rather do more woodwork than epoxy!

I've got the frames up on the strongback. Next up is to slot the central girder in place and then attach the transom.20210604_202003.jpg

That looks like great fun. A local friend is contemplating a Redwing 18, so I will point out this thread to him. Lots more room.

I think she'll be quitea decent sized boat, for the length she actually is. I asked Paul to draw her as wide as sensible, for towing width and handling. I also asked for sensibly sized side decks, I dont want to be walking a tightrope every time I go forward to drop the anchor etc.
