  • Re: The Harbor Master Called me Today

I recall a vintage captain friend of mine coming by my boat while we were re-installing a swim platform that had been removed earlier on to allow rebuilding the transom.

On overhearing comments from some of the team regarding beefing-up the swim platform/transom connection, he remarked :

"The underside fuselage at the tail end of an aircraft is designed to break away, should a tail strike occur during take-off......similarly, for the said appendage, without ripping-off the transom, should the former hit (or be hit by) whatever"

Simpler to implement on fibreglass boats, using low-mass swim platform components.

That’s an excellent point, and I think that push comes to shove the brackets I made will be the first thing to break. Not that I really want to test it.

Because nothing says, “ready to go back in the water” like cutting a hole in the bottom of your boat.

Ummmm, Jim. That bilge pump's not gonna handle that.

              OK.... why the missing plank?
              Hope it's not serious.

I noticed that the butt end of that plank was soft and I’ve been debating what to do about it for the last couple days. In the end I just wasn’t comfortable leaving it and hoping for the best.

Not to worry though, I have deployed the new and improved “Stop Leak”, available at a lumber yard near you. (Patent pending, some assembly required, results may vary)

Totally simple Rich, all I needed was eight hours to chunk out the old plank, spile the new, make a dozen test fits, bend it in using floor jacks, wack it with a big hammer, take it off again and shave a bit more off, then bend it back in. Simple.

Its the WBF equivalent of a cooking show, where the Face on screen just happens to have one in the oven looking perfect.

                          Just like that Ben.

In other news, the new plank is caulked and my boat helper has been promoted to caulking apprentice.

I got a hold of my boat mover today to schedule the move and he said,”how about this afternoon?” Glad I was ready.
