The design is pretty forgiving i think. The strakes are over size, there's plenty of room for rough treatment.
    Its quite fun.

Got some fillets on the inside. the work comes up messy against the white of the boards, but the fillets are fairly light.

got out some material for the quarter knees. this is a bit of Australian Kauri.

        Bow knee material.jpg

Trusting my bevel gauge and bench saw - worked out okay in the end.

Forward knees in place. I also gave the transoms a coat of Epoxy, i was worried about the various fixed creating stains. i want to finish the transoms bright.

        And Aft

Messed up with the first knee i installed.
I didn't think the screw holes through well enough. i drilled through the transom parallel to the knee, which means the screw head doesn't lay flat against the outside of the transom.
for the rest i drilled up at an angle, 90 degrees to the transom face.

bit like this; A) Bad, B) Good.

Dry fit of a rub rail.

got the timber out of a big plank of DF i was given.
the danger with recycling timber is nails - so i inpected very cafrefully before pushing it through the table saw and thicknesser.
didn't detect an old nail buried deep inside - took a gappy tooth out of my thicknesser knives!

overall - I'm not keen on recycling timber, the old holes all have rot around them. but rub strips are more or less sacrificial anyway. I'll dose the screw holes with some acetone i have on the shelf and then epoxy it all in eventually.

I left the rub strips over size but couldn't bend them to the shape.
I thicknessed down to the design dimensions and they bent in fine. I would say those dimensions are the maximum unless you are keen to steam them in or something.

Music to my ears!! We are about to mount the transoms and mid frame on the building stock. We somehow cut the transom out with the slab of wood we'd made up somewhat crooked. So the glue lines have a distinct slant to them. Not to worry, the timber is quite dark, PNG Rosewood, and the glue lines barely show.
I milled some Bluegum today, not at all the colour of yours, more a yellow/cream colour. Different variety, or local variation? Dunno.

If you can adjust the knives lengthwise, shift one to the left and the other to the right. That way you can avoid having to resharpen the blades until it happens again or they're blunt. A lot of small thicknessers don't allow this but others do.

thanks mate - i can see that working.
will check the system and see if it can happen.

very possibly Rick. I bought it a few years ago to make pedals for a pedal boat (which didn't quite work out).

i do recall the guy at the yard noting distinctly that it wasn't NZ Kauri - so i have had it in my mind that therefore it was Oz Kauri.
i meandered the WA Karri forests once - absolutely magnificent forests.

I think as Peter said, there's Sydney Bluegum and tassie Bluegum, and they are not the same. Some we cut today is a bit darker, but certainly not red.
