I'm sure glad that I don't live in that place. I'd be walking around drooling over boats all the time and never get anything else done.

Great pix Tim, thanks. I am thinking about cruising Snoose up to PT tomorrow or Wednesday. Things are slack at the office and the weather is too nice to sit here. I used to spend a lot of time up there but haven't been there in a while. Tried to find Dan to pick his brain but couldn't find him. Do you know if there is good guest dockage at Point Hudson? Or is it better to go to the other marina. I know the main marina is closer to the yard and interesting boats (and the grocery store) but a bit of a hike from downtown. I prefer anchoring, but not in PT.

I am not sure about guest dockage. Id like to find out though. Thinking of sailing the Typhoon around the island and over to PT. Lots of boats anchored out.

Many years ago I anchored my Blanchard Sr. there during the WB Festival. Had gone ashore to spend the night at a friend's. Storm came up in the middle of the night so I rushed back to discover I couldn't even launch my dinghy thru the surf. I spent the rest of the night/early morning pacing the beach watching while several other boats came ashore. I fully expected to lose Blackfish that night, but the anchor held. When I did finally get back out to her, the only thing unusual I found was a lot of kelp wrapped around the headstay!

Yep. I was there leaving the festival that one year when all those boats came ashore. Either its poor holding, too exposed or both.

    Tim;
Looks like the mother lode. I particularly like the pinky schooner and the black hulled sloop. Thanks for the pics.

Id like to find out more about the boat at the top. Looks like an S&S design.

Is that a for-sale sign hanging on the pulpit? Do you remember the boat's name? (Oops, I see the transom, no name.)

It has most recently been called "Fjord III". Don't know if that's original. I think Manuel Campos is the designer, though not sure of that either.

I was going to hazard Rhodes, but the transom looks a bit small, I think. Lovely shape.

That first pic of the flush deck cruiser is a doozy. I wonder if the signs on the pulpits are just advertisements for the work done, or brokerage (for sale) signs?

Not sure. Brokerage I think, although the boat has brand new paint all around.

It'd be a good idea. I've been lucky the few times I came into Point Hudson in storms and there were slips available.

I'm sitting at Point Hudson marina right now. Came in yesterday about noon and put into a slip. Checked in and they said that one was reserved ( altho it had no sign) so I had to move. $40 per night for my 36' boat without electricity. Nice facilities tho. Best to reserve in advance if you can. PT has lots of festivals in the summer so demand is high.

Right now I'm looking out the port at the schooner Martha. I don't think I have ever seen a more perfect boat. Everything about her is right. She came in yesterday and did a u turn about 5' from my stern and then laid alongside her dock effortlessly.

Dan, if you are lurking, I called but I obviously copied your number wrong and I'm outta here in an hour or so. Have to catch up with you back in Seattle.

This iPhone takes pictures and I can post words to the forum. But I haven't figured out how to post iPhone pix to the forum with it. Joe, have you figured that out?

Did Martha do the schooner race? I was there a few days ago and Barlevento was there. I would have expected them to be off in the race.

Don't know. I didn't get a chance to speak to them.

BTW, Seattle is having temps in the 80's all this week so I thought it would be a good time for this little cruise. Right now in PT it is 52 degrees, gray and raining, and the fog comes and goes so visibility sux. Three days out and I haven't seen anything above 65 degrees yet. Going back to Seattle where it's summer, 'cause this ain't it.

It's both, poor holding and no shelter. There's better holding ground south of the ferry pier.

Thats not even all of them. There are probably twice as many on the hard. And I didnt even begin to take pictures of the boats on the docks.

I knew a guy in college that went off to apprentice under frers. That boat sure has an S&S influence. I thought frers was mostly modern racers.

I don't know much about the boat, but my source says it has a pretty good racing pedigree on the West coast, as least. Lipton Cup winner perhaps? I agree, Tim, I picture Frers as an offshore racing sled guy, but (apparently) what do I know? It appears that it's going on the block again c/o Wallace Yacht brokers. I've been checking his site periodically to see when this boat will be posted. He typically loads his listings with pics and data so there should be some more info then.

Curiosity got the better of me so I emailed Wallace yachts for more info. This is what he said:

    She is Fjord III.

She was Gemran Frers' personal yacht, and she is coincidentally the vessel in which he met and became friends with Olin Stephens on.

She comes with a history of off shore sailing wins in her day. German Frers had 8 vessels, all named Fjord I- VIII.

She has had several hundred thousand dollars spent in a total restoration over the last 10 years and will be offered between 2 and 300k usd.

According to the broker this boat has Frers listed as designer/builder/owner. She was suposedly built in 1947.

According to Wikipedia Frers was born in 1941 and designed his first boat in 1958.

Apparently Frers worked for S&S in the 60s.

Either the build date is wrong and this boat was one of Frers early designs from before he developed his own style or its actually an S&S boat.

The latest is that this boat was designed by the father of the Frers that worked for Olin Stephens in the 60s who was friends with Rod Stephens Sr.

Too confusing for me. back to work....

Am getting prepared to take a trip up north from my home port in olympia. My daughter is coming out from Ny to celebrate my 56th so I told her we would take the boat out for a few days. How is Gig Harbor in the middle of the week for guest docking? Any suggestions on restaurants and shops there?

German Frers Sr. designed, owned, and sailed Fjord III. He founded a yacht design office in Argentina in 1928. His son German Frers grew up designing yachts and went to the USA to work in the S&S office for 3 years in the 1960's. In 1970 German Frers returned to Argentina to take over his father's (G. Frers Sr.) sucessful office. In 1992 German "Mani" Frers Jr. joined the firm and managed the Italian branch office for a number of years.

Gota be careful which G. Frers your're taking about....

You might do better to post this question as a seperate topic, with "Gig Harbor Mooring / Access?" in the title
