Navigator Stove Bling

I've decided in this economy it's a good idea to invest in precious metals. A deck iron and smokehead arrived today from Andrew at Navigator Stove Works. Boy he does beautiful work and I just wanted to give him a plug and share the joy. He is a real pleasure to do business with. It seems (almost) a shame to install these on the boat and get em all crudded up!

Dip it in a polysulphide solution -Caswell's A02 for instance - then buff the edges.

Considering the cost/value of copper these days, might be best to let Paladin crud it up ASAP. Out here they are stealing the copper pipes from underneath foreclosed houses...

That's swell.
Magic's water iron was galvanized cast iron. It was coated with dado brown paint.
George Moffett, master of the schooner Brilliant called it Swedish bronze polish.
The brown paint never looked good.

I have a similar deck fitting and smokehead from the now defunct Lunenberg Foundry but it's not nearly as elegant as that one you have there. It works great though. I used it with their "Gift" coal stove.

I often use livers of sulphur (Sulphurated Potash) to age copper and brass. But just leaving it alone will produce the same results over time.

Thorne, that's a really good point. I've ordered one of these from McMaster-Carr:



It'll plug the hole in the deck iron so I can remove the smokehead when I'm not on the boat or the stove's not in use.

Steven - It's going to be a Sardine like Russ's only, as beautiful as his porcelain finish is, I decided to get it in plain iron it so I could put the balance of the stove budget into the copper and bronze fittings. It's going into the space formerly occupied by the porta-potti. This is a foam mockup in place waiting for the shielding to arrive. I was concerned about clearances but Andrew says it's OK...
