Question about a weird design

Hey all there

I,m Porter, from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Really this forum is amazing and I like so much your knockwledge about boats, wooden boats and construction.
Also i 'm a reader of Woodenboat, the better magazine by far about boats.
I need a bit of your help, because u knowing a lot about design and history of naval design , too.

can u say me what design is this? Im looking to know who is the designer and where to get the plans. At least to get some tips about Age, another seems boats, among others.
for me this design is too weird, may be a fake design ?
I guess it because the rudder is too small

The rudder does seem muy pequeño. I wonder if that is supposed to be an actual scale model of a real ship or just a generic model.

Looks workboaty, to me; maybe it's just the small doghouse so far aft. Looks like it might have been meant to be a schooner? 3 masts, anyway.

What you have is a model that has parts that do not really fit with each other.

Wierd is right.

The hull design is old and the keel is very modern and the skeg and rudder look like a sharpie design sort of.


If I owned that model I would look up "BLUENOSE and if it looks the same then I would cut the keel off and put the proper keel and rudder on the bottom and then it will be worth more.


Right now it is a mixture that makes no sense.

I would also paint the hull because no real boat would have varnished wood below the waterline.
Maybe just leave the bullworks varnished wood but you could start by getting so boat books showing boats from the 1850's or so and see what will fit.

By the way....why is your head missing from the photo? Are you a drug cartel kingpin? /hahahahaha

One more suggestion.
After you decide on the design you need to figure out the scale. So if for instance BLUENOSE would fit with that design of hull then You can measure you model and devide that number into the size of the real boat and you will know the scale of the model.

You may want to remove those structures from the deck and maybe save the parts in case they fit into the scale of the model.

Make the new keel and rudder first. Then make a stand for it and work on the deck layout.

no I recognize the hull shape as a real boat i have run across. I just cant remember what the heck it was.

kinda look like something of Bluenose or Whaling schooner..

The Bluenose and fishing schooners had full keels.

well, it is a long history but the craftsman who did this hull, died a few years ago , the son of the craftsman wants to sell me the hull. So he don't have nothing about plans, name of designer, absolutely nothing.

I agree with u, about it is very weird, because, the hull has modern and old design .. the keel is very modern and the shape of the design of hull is old. the rudder is small . the bow is straight , when the old design had been very stylized bow

I guess this model is not a real boat.

the model is long, 1,20 meters, and 3 mast

I dont know what I will do about it, whether to buy it or not.

really I admire your magazine and community interested on old boats. really it is a stunning hobbie.
Our great argentinean designer is German Frers, father and son. G Frers ( father), has made many excellent wooden designs. A classic sail boat is the GRUMETE with many sailors making currently challenges and regatas . Well, It is one of the my favorites.

Its definitely not modeled after a Banks Fishing Schooner, weird keel or no weird keel... To me it looks similar to Ted Brewer's Tree of Life.







Maybe look at some of Buehler's larger schooners, they tend to have that 'look' as well.

What are you looking for? Are you intending to build, or have someone build for you? Go into "Books" on this site and order "Thirty Wooden Boats" or "Forety" or "Fifty" or all of them. Then make a selection. Get some plans for a boat that is a known success. Do not waste your time on what maybe just a toy boat.

Grumete, Spanish for a ship's apprentice, certainly looks like a attractive design. I tried a Google search and turned up your post from 8 hrs. earlier. Can you show us a drawing of her lines?

Besides the too-small rudder, the wheelhouse is disproportionately small given the overall scale of the hull, keel, etc.

I don't think it's meant to represent a real craft, but is rather a piece of folk-art.

The Grumete lines draw is very hard to get as free on the net, but if u like so much this sail boat u can buy its draws and plans in the Grumete Association. They sell plans and all about Grumete
