Default Stem Rabbet for a Dark Harbor 12 1/2

    Hi all,

My offset table calls for a rabbet half-breadth distance at the stem and then about 4' aft to be 7/8". The lines are very sleak which leaves me with a distance between my middle (or apex) line to be too small at only about 1/2". I think I should have at least 1 1/2".

I don't imagine that their offset table is incorrect but I thought I'd post this to the forum to see if there is something I am missing.

    Thanks,
    Glenn

    Hi Glenn,

I had the same dimension in the stem of the cutter I am building at 19'. The keel also tapered to a 1/2" in the rabbet. Yacht scantlings!

What is the overall dimension of the keel/stem/sternpost?

    Alex

What is your recommended scantling for a stems width between it's opposing middle lines?

I want to go with 1 1/2" for my boat with her 20' LOA.

Lots of boats have been built with a two piece stem assembly. The planking and stem are trimmed to a flat transverse surface and then a false stem is fitted to protect the hood ends and with a view to being replaceable. As long as there is enough material to retain the outboard portion, the amount seperating the planking should not be too important.I seem to remember that Lloyds scantlings called for a plank landing of twice the plank thickness.I also believe I recall Pete Culler writing that he often nicked the bolts holding the stem assembly together when cutting rebates as there was very little surplus material.
