    Default Oughred Auk

I had committed to a new interior, new electrical system, total repaint, new inboard and a new tender for Pendragon 15 months ago. The interior, engine and wiring are 99% complete. The repaint will need to wait until warmer weather and the Auk is in it's first coat of primer. There is still a lot of fairing but the hull should get flipped next week to finish up the interior. The Auk is a great project and a lot of fun to build.

I love that little boat! The cutest little thing under eight feet long by a huge margin!

Hello one and all. I'm new here, so please be gentle.

I'm going to start a build soon, to share with my son (9yr) and daughter (5yr). Well, mostly just with my son, but you'd better not try to tell Claire that she's too young to help. A wee warrior lass that one.

The Auk is my first choice for this project. None of us have any serious woodworking experience, but I love wood boats, have many fond memories of hauling a little plastic sunfish down to the small pond behind my house as a child to mess about, and I'm determined to get the kids off their behinds this summer doing something that isn't virtual, even if that's just grumping at me while I peel shavings and sand down some planks.

Anyway, mostly I just want to introduce myself and get a sanity check from you folks that this is a reasonable sized project for beginners. Also, any advice on getting started and working with kids would be very welcome.

    Cheers.

Beatiful job on the hull Chris. What wood did you use for stem laminations and keel/keelson? Keep the photos coming. John
Welcome to the forum DaddyB, You couldn't have picked a prettier little boat than Auk. Iain Oughtred's designs are inspired. If you have the plans already I suggest you get a copy of Iain's Building Plywood Boats. It is chock a block full of his tips and tricks, as well as his wit and philosophy. Good Luck

This is not the simplest boat to build, but it is far more interesting and able than a crude, hard-chined plywood box. Go for it! Your kids will be inspired by seeing their dad create something beautiful with his own hands. I was inspired by my own dad building custom furniture as a hobby when I was young.

The hull is 1/4 in marine ply and the inner stem is white oak laminated with epoxy and rivits. The outer stem is one piece white oak that was steamed and screwed in place.

DaddyB the project was fun and if you take your time you and your kids will have a great time and get a great boat in the end.

    DaddyB,

I undertook the 10-foot version of Ian's Acorn as my first boatbuilding project (and only so far). I didn't have a lot of woodworking experience going into it. I just read his instructions and his Clinker Plywood Boatbuilding Manual, and forged ahead. I think it came out pretty well:

Here's acouple of pictures of Andy Stewart's traditional lapstrake, copper-fastened cedar on oak 8' Oughtred. It makes a delightful ship-to-shore tender.

Longer batten - 1/2" CPVC pipe. Comes 10' sections and for half a buck you can get a CPVC coupler and add another pipe for 20' total. Works for me!
