    Default Found:old schooner

Saw them towing this in to the Western Shore wharf the other day.I stopped by this afternoon to have a look and take some pics.Looks to be a schooner hull in hard shape.I paced her off at around 80 feet overall.

No one seems to know who the owner is although one local told me he thought it was towed over from the Lunenburg area. She's in hard shape though.Has a noticable hog to her, rotten bulwarks, damage to the bow and sides, crappy ply and glass deck houses.Anyone interested?

Earl, looks like the schooner that's been sitting out in Lunenburg Bay for a year or two. I haven't been by the harbour recently to see if the one from there is gone. If that's the one, there will have to be a change to the Wednesday night race course because it was usually one of the marks !

Hey Steve, if it's the one from Lunenburg, your budget wouldn't be too far off. She's quite hogged and in pretty rough shape. Not a project I would want to tackle.

Howard, the Municipality is already looking for the owners to remove it from the wharf.Looks like a bonfire may be in order.
Jamie, naw it's nowhere near Airlie's age.I would expect it was built in the 60's.Looks to me to be Newfoundland built.I would say what planking I could see was either spruce or fir,(Eastern).Definitely seen better days.Just waiting for when steve wins the Lottery .

I agree with the Newfoundland origins - the transom is not the usual form for a NS-built schooner. Also, the higher topsides are a feature common to Nfld. schooners. And what's with the doubly-broken sheer?
Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

OK, on second thought, If I had a million dollars, I build a new Schooner instead. I did my share of old boat rescues in the 80's.

Right on Earl. I miss those guys. "Q" doesn't quite cut it for me, but at least we still have Stuart MacLean.

Umm, did not know her origins, just the angle of the wheel and he box behind caught my eye... Stern is no Tancook stern based on Airie..But as to vintage.. I'll leave that question to the pros.

Jamie, an awful, awful lot of Lunenburg Foundry steering gears (among other cast & forged boat hardware) were sold to Newfoundland builders. So, yes, you are probably right that the boat has LFE steering.

Not surprised. It still rates and although downsized, produces a lot of stuff. Most of which is now out of my price range...

Re: schooner... I do not doubt the gearing is the same as Airlie's. If there is a question, that gearing was probably massed produced between ummm I don't know, 1940's through early 60's which should be a help in determining her age.
Except for Airlie, that is the only other example I have seen with the same configuration.. But I have not seen them ALL.

Michael, yeah kind of weird eh.I didn't go aboard to have a closer look as she is buttoned up.I may be able to get a closer look if the Municipality gets involved. There are some concerns about damage to the wharf which is also suffering from neglect to some extent.
Definitely not your typical Novi stern.Love to hear the storey that goes with this one.

The boat was towed up from ME by Rick and Karen on Wanderbird a few years ago. It is from NFLD but is much older than the 60's, probably around the 20's.

Last I heard it was a guy up on the northern shore that wanted to rebuild her. I would think that someone in Loonyburg would know who. Mike Grey may know also.

I'd be worth a visit with a chainsaw and crowbar before she heads for the knackers. Likely there's hardware, the worm gear for instance, that's certainly worth cutting out of her. I hate to see that stuff go to the landfill, but it doesn't seem to be worth the work of taking it off to the salvage guys.

Bob,if it does go to the landfill the big metal bits will have to be separated for recycling and the wood will probably be chipped or composted.I'm sure the deconstruction will not be done delicately so what is left probably won't be worth much. Not sure how they would go about it.Possibly drag it to the ramp at high tide and break it up with an excavator.Have to be careful about getting debris, fluids, fuel and such in the water.
Ted do you have a contact number for Mike Grey?
