Default True Beauty Comes from Within

This thread is dedicated to our boats' interiors. Interior can mean the "inside" of an open boat, or it can be the public and private spaces down below on a yacht or cruising vessel. The idea is to post your boat's interior pictures here so we can all see where you live when you're you're really living. This presumes nothing beats time spent aboard, of course. No rules, but it would be really nice if we stuck to member's boats to start. This way, we get to come aboard, virtually speaking. I'll start with a few that kicked off the idea.

Alan's (Raindance) great pilot house and main cabin forward

Chris Ross' Taylor and the beautiful interiors she surrounds

The beautiful helm station of Sunrise, New York, a 1929 47 foot Dawn Motoryacht

What are you packing? Step right up! We want to see some interiors!

    And her helm station

    And where we eat

    Where Lindy knits underway

Beautiful. It looks quite liveable and cozy. There's nothing like varnished wood and paint in the right places to give a real bright & cheery interior.

The interior of Zeltic may not be flashy, but at least its got an interesting centrepiece:

It's a bit hard with Zeltic, the boat interior IS the Engine room.

    Lew,

I was referring to this post, but I think Daniel should take advantage of the permission Slip and post another piccie of Zeltic's interior.

Haha, well if I had any to show, I would, but I've not taken interior pics as yet. Maybe when I've tidied up, put the sole back, etc etc.

I love the cambered coach tops and t&g ceilings set off by the teak (or mahogany) battens and beams that so many of these boats show. The shapes are so pleasing.

I love Whampoa's Interior , My friends boat Contour of Cuthill is very similar. We've had conversations before , particularly about Ed Burnetts S and S restoration work, that reflects a similar approach.
We have a cave on Riada, all wood finish is varnish effectively with very little paint. Its original though and bit of a mid '70's time capsule... I'm reluctant to paint it out.

This is the interior of a triple cockpit skin on frame baidarka I saw at the Center for Wooden Boats at Lake Union, Seattle, in 2003. I couldn't get my head and the camera both in there, so I just put the camera in and shot this.

This is all I have right now. Some parts are dirty, some are worn down, others are nicely varnished. I'm trying to decide whether to continue varnishing, or rebuild the interior completely...

    Hey Michael,

Is that all lashed together with regular old sein twine? And is there a specific reason the thwarts are lashed rather then fastened?

At the moment it lies only within my imagination, (though that aspires pretty much to Whampoa's interior)

    DAN
Its a braided line, but I've heard of seine twine being used also. The mast step thwart is screwed and lashed, the rest are lashed. The thwart behind the cat has bigger line to make it easily removable for sleeping space.

There's not much below but it's simple and pretty cozy.

Sjogin was never oiled or painted below. Just bare cedar and oak.

    And here's the Galley.

And that's about it. No real "furniture", just enough sprawling room for me and an occasional friend or two.

Thanks, John! They were out of the boat because I varnished them separately. If that picture were newer, it would show them in, but she's sitting upside down on horses awaiting her last coat of paint just now.

    How's the project coming?

Nice! Do you have any more shots of LOTUS? If the camera were to turn 45° to the left, there would be a built in secretary with a beaver carved in it. The carved beaver pays homage to the PNWs first steam vessel. It was named BEAVER. The boat was built in London way back when. And ended it's days on the rocks in Vancouver, B.C. The wood for that secretary was salvaged from the BEAVER.

I have a lot of personal stories involving LOTUS. A real piece of history there.

    Hi Russ
I love the stove - how big is it & is it a wood burner ?
Something like that on Raindance would be perfect to take the edge off a winters morning.
Love that you have it on a small boat, must be very cosy when fired up.

    Dan,

Yep, here are some more shots of the interior of Lotus. She is owned by Christian Gruye and her husband Brion Toss (of Ship Rigger's Apprentice fame). They are friends of mine and I've spent a couple of nights aboard along with some shorter visits. She is a real classic and they are doing their best to be good stewards.

The drop front desk with BEAVER carved in it is in the corner.

    Another view of the salon.

A stateroom - my home aboard for two days.

    Pilothouse.

Okay, not quite an interior shot, but this is the upper deck behind the pilothouse.

Portside on the weather deck. We're on our way from Port Townsend to Port Hadlock.

    Cheers,

Thanks Alan. the Sardine model burns wood or charcoal and is about a foot square. Plenty big enough for Sjogin. Details at Navigator Stove Works.
