    Default Elvish Boats

In Lord of the Rings the boats the elves gave the fellowship any ideas what they are or who built them?

    Shouldn't that be "Elfin"?

I would think "Elvish" means of or pertaining to the late Mr. Presley.

    Sorry,

    Brian

If you search the forum for 'LOTR' you will find that it has been discussed here and then the definitive discussion was lost during one of the periodic refits that the forum must undertake to remain seaworthy.
If you are really lucky someone who knows the answer to your question will be along soon.
Until then.....you'll just have to put up with some elf jokes.

The boats were custom made for the movie and by all accounts were extremely tender, heavy fiberglass thingys.

I thought they were plywood lapstrake.

Not in LOTR, but I can understand. I remember in one of the movies, in one scene someone says "He needs Elvish medicine." First I heard it I could have sworn the line was "He needs Elvis medicine."

Yeah, I think the elves would have done better with an Arkansas traveler. Or maybe a NW coast dugout? I remember thinking that those boats looked really awkward to paddle. Maybe that's why they faded away?

I can't see any fasteners so maybe it is made of elfibreglass.......

Doesn't look like such a hard boat to handle. Maybe if they'd used sailors instead of actors...

You might be thinking of Mike Keifer's boats for Lemony Snicket and POTC3.

No, I was remembering this from another thread:

    Quote:
The LOTR boats were built by a local guy called Wayne Roberts who unfortunately died of a heart-attack about two years ago. A very talented guy. The boats are lapstrake/epoxy/ply clench-nailed and light and strong. They still have them at the Miramar studios in Wellington. There are about eight boats, all different sizes for different shots. They sometimes used very small people in small boats. The engineers over there tried to build some using aluminum plate lapstrake for some roughwater shots but they abandoned that on about the first plank.
    Cheers

Dude, that looks like the crackle finish in the bathroom cabinets in our old house! OK, it's not crackled, but same color wash.
