Checked my dam and it's full now so the rain can stop.
No filling and fairing so I figured I'd get a bit done on the two fairing pieces.

One on the right is the bow end and the left one is the stern end.
I started on the bow end but realised I didn't have quite enough timber there to get a good curved face. So that one is on hold till the glue sets.

More luck with the stern piece and it's roughed to shape.

As you can see there's not a lot of fun to be had there. Definitely gumboot country.

I had some 4mm (?) stainless steel cable given to me a few years back that I planned to use for the safely lines. I measured it out today and there is exactly the right amount to run two down each side.

I managed to get an hour or so in before heading up to Brisbane on Friday. This is the bow end fairing piece with one side more or less to shape.

Here we have both sides done.

    This both fairing pieces together.

Does that bolt onto the leading edge of the keel stack Gary? If so there will be a bit of difference in expansion as they take up water , one being a stack and the other long grain. It might be worth bolting through slotted holes to allow the stack to slide past as it "grows". What do you think?

There shouldn't be any water take up Peter as both pieces will be glued and screwed on then the whole lot will be epoxy saturated and Dynel sheathed.

The cold nights and morning aren't helping my epoxy go off. I'm getting a few runs, I'll have to make it stiffer. Anyway it's starting to like the finished product should.

I had hoped that todays fairing off would be the last but there were still a few hollows I'd missed. Tomorrow is it though, any minor bumps can stay there. Another job for tomorrow is getting some clear finish on the bamboo battens.
Anyone watching good at soldering? I suck at it and could use some advice.

    How the boat sees it.

Had to use the gas blow torch to dry off the condensation first but it's just had a coat of epoxy with a bit of TPA added.
If I don't end up working and by the look of the weather I don't think I will be, then I will get a coat of primer on the whole thing.

Beautiful sunny day. Last bit of filling yesterday so this arvo I managed to get two coats of primer on the keel. Nothing like paint to show up the imperfections though. I'll get another couple of coats on it and I reckon that will do it.

    Peter I'm using Wattyl Epinamel UC230, it's a two pack, high build epoxy undercoat.Hmm, I shouldn't call it a primer should I.
Okay this is a side view, is that what you meant?

I scored this old trailer winch from a skip at the local car wreckers for nothing today. Didn't really have much of a look at it when I unbolted it and it doesn't seem to be geared and the spring on the pawl is possibly stuffed. I figured I could use it with the aid of some pipe rollers to slide the keel under the boat.

"Primer" sounds about right Gary(good choice, by the way) and yes, that is the view this voyeur needed to better fill in the blanks. Thanks for the quick response!

I do wonder what I shall do in the shed once I have finished. There is the tender to build of course but I doubt even I could spin that job out more than a few short weeks.
The truth is though that SWMBO has stated that a condition of concentrating on finishing the boat that the house should receive on completion and launch, a commensurate amount of attention. Of course I may have to point out to her that the shed will require that the radio be replaced. The present one barely warrants the name and one can not be expected to perform feats of construction and assembly without a radio. I shudder with apprehension at the thought.

Given the fun I had getting it to where it is in the mud and drizzle the last few feet should be comparatively easy...he said.

The keel is done, just needs to be bolted on. The old boat trailer winch I scored moved the keel about 12 inches before it cacked itself. Also gave the below waterline on the boat a coat of primer as well. I masked the waterline but I'm really not happy with it, it's just not a clean curve.

    Started on the cradle today.

    Rebates done.

The timber is all hardwood and 150-170mm x 70-75mm and the whole base is approximately 2.7m long by 2.5 wide.

Each cross piece is held into it's rebate by 2 10mm coach screws. There is also a length of 12mm threaded rod running parallel with each cross piece and through both rails.
Here's a shot of the base more or less assembled.

My back was starting to get a bit sore by this stage (my $$ making jobs are a bit labour intensive at the moment and the back isn't liking it at all) so I figured I'd go practive my soldering instead.

Nevertheless,I can see how difficult it may become to relinquish your shops' allure and usefullness once your boat is out and launched!

Good luck with your keel install and craddle fitting!

    Thank you Peter.
I dismantled the cradle base, dug out a big enough flat area under the boat. Then with much fiddling, grunting and a reasonable amount of expletives reassembled the base under the boat. Of course the keel is now in the way and will have to be moved back a couple of feet.
I might add that at this point I have no idea how I am going to get the keel up onto the base but I feel a degree of improvisation will play a large part in the solution.
The weather...is not raining and though cold in the mornings by our standards but not those of Canada is in a phrase, bliss on a stick. That is to say, glorious sunny days.

Nothing is happening at the moment because people keep waving money under my nose to do work for them. So though the cradle is not finished and the keel is not on, at least money is going into the the launch fund.
I did buy 6 metres of 304 SS 25mm tube the other day for the stanchions and unspecified projects.

No it's 304, it's above the waterline so it should handle a bit of salt water.

Don't believe it, I'm sorry to say it after you've spent your hard earned dollars Gary, but 304 stainless has no place anywhere on a boat, it will start to rust within weeks of you launching the boat.
