The original 1931 rig on the schooner had all kinds of different sizes of wire rope, but since 1939 has had 3/8" 1x19 everywhere except the bobstay. First, galvanized wire rope, then stainless. Well, the stainless is shot and we're going back to galvanized with the re-launch but I can't imagine an inexperienced wire-rope splicer (me) doing a good job with 1x19. But, I note that though it's more flexible, the easier to splice 7x19 IWRC in 7/16" size has breaking strength of 17780 lbs which is competitive with 3/8" 1x19 and sufficient for our rig.
Anybody out there with experience replacing 1x19 with 7x19? how'd it go?
