Default Sabb G 10hp and Suitable Boat Designs

I found a 1975 Sabb G 10hp engine for sale locally and was wondering about this engine and what possible boat designs that would be suitable. I ideally I would like a double-ender with a large pilot house for minimalist overnight trips. I read the manual and was somewhat overwhelmed by all the scheduled maintenance required and how much room this takes. I'm not a mechanic but it almost looks like I need to be one. Are parts still available for this? I'm confused about the control knobs. Does the engine have to be within reach of the helm with no engine cover?

It has not been used for a long time I think. He said everything is in good shape except the exhaust manifold. It has a keel cooler and a variable speed prop. I'm going to see it today if the weather cooperates. I have to take my boat to his island.

When Tom Colvin built his Gazelle he launched it without an engine. After several years of cruising he pulled the boat and installed one of those engines. I don't recall the horsepower but it was a one-lunger like yours. He reported the engine gave him all the performance he needed.

If you're not familiar with Gazelle it is a 42 foot light displacement steel schooner, shoal draft full keel, 42' on deck, around 33 or 34 foot waterline, 10 foot beam (guessing from a faulty memory) and 4 foot draft. As designed she displaced around 18,000 pounds.

I'd look to some of William Garden's small launches for inspiration. He drew and built several. I really like Boathouse #5, as drawn she wants an Atomic 4, but man she's got tumblehome everywhere and just just looks full of purpose.

The Sabb G has a variable pitch prop, not a feathering prop. This allows adjustment for sea conditions - high RPMs and small pitch for pushing into big waves, low RPM's and larger pitch for flat sea. It turns a big 18" diameter prop. The engine can be started by hand. There are many lubrication points requiring frequent attention. It is heavy (over 400 lbs). It operates at low speed. It is reliable. It can be completely rebuilt without having to be removed from the boat - cylinder liner, etc. It's no longer made. Parts available from the solitary North American agent in Florida, who is very responsive and will call you back but not on Sunday mornings when he attends church.

Sam Devlin designed Godzilla around the Sabb engine.

Chesapeake double-wedge launch with a torpedo boat stern?

They were semi-displacement boats designed for about this amount of power in the 23- 26-foot range. You can get plans from the Smithsonian.

I went out and looked at the engine. My bad, it's a fixed prop model. He had it hanging from a tree with a tarp over it. The engine is manual start only, no starter but I could add one. Cool engine but I was turned off by the fact that he could not get it in neutral. I think I might offer to help him get it running. I would feel a whole lot better if I could see it running. Since it's keel cooled could I just run some copper tubing into a bucket? I'd really like to play with this engine but I'm intimidated but it's 440lb weight and it's age.

    I'll add a photo soon.

#29 is a clutch and #27 varies the prop pitch from full forward to full reverse. The wee handle on #27 is the throttle. These things are bulletproof. I love it that they have grease fittings everywhere.

I'm not sure if they still produce the old 8-10, but finding parts surely isn't a problem. Here is link to the parts catalog on the Sabb homepage, and a bunch of other catalogs and manuals.

lLast Winter a friend in Norway sent me a link to a video of open double-ender (they have a name for them in Norway) powered by a single-cyl Sabb. That boat sure did sound great! If I had a Sabb like that I'd be designing a boat around it, too.

Hi all, this is my first post...

I just brought home a Sabb Model G, so I thought I wouldn't be derailing this thread too much.

I'm just getting into boat building, so when this engine came up, I figured if I got it, it would help me decide on what kind of boat to build. At least it will keep me from going to0 big. Well, that Buehler Pilgrim seems nice...

As I mentioned it's a model G, and came with the variable pitch prop/shaft, some sort of heat exchanger thing, and a muffler. It also came with a box of stuff like belts, fittings, gaskets, springs, those funny cigarettes, doohickeys, and whatchamacallits.

Ha, by now you can see this is going to be a learning experience for me. Luckily I am in no hurry.

Everything but the engine is disassembled, but it all seems straight forward enough...

There were lots of old motors similar to the sabb - some advantages, some disadvantages. The sabb is strong and very stingy, but vibrates and is a lot louder than the petrol types. A small youtube search for sabb will give you plenty of videos with largers and smaller boats.

But the petrol engines are worth looking at, too. They are so quiet you can easily carry on a converstion while sitting on the housing. Very pleasing sound.
I visited the old Marna factory in Mandal a few years ago. Looks the same as in this video... some very nice boat shots here, too.

Great, I will probably need help at some point... Thanks

    quick question:

Would it be safe to hoist my engine using the loop (see picture a few posts above) on top? It seems like it's there for that reason, but I'd rather not find out the hard way that it isn't.

    Thanks, James

I'm a bit late to this party, but I rarely miss a chance to advocate for stuff from the late Bob Baker's catalog, as the plans are still available. The link shows a very pretty, and very traditional launch in Plan No. 107 -
