    Default Where is Bolger's Moccasin?

I am searching for the Phil Bolger designed Moccasin. Last I heard she was supposedly in the Chesapeake (2 years ago) I know Phil and her original owner and neither of them know where she now sails. One day I would love t o see her in person!

I thought she was one of his best designs when I saw a photo of her (in his book Small Boats?) Please let us know if you find her!

The story of her design was quite interesting. Her owner asked Bolger for a variant of the LFH Nerereia, to be built on Majorca; he wanted a little more freeboard, however. Bolger realized anything he did to a great design would be to its detriment so he convinced the client to spring for an all new design with the attributes he sought.

The photos of her lines and launch were stunning, especially the one of her floating suspended by a crane while the builder walks under her.

Where can I find these photos? All I have seen is the one of her at a mooring with sails up-in dead calm.

They are in my copy of "Bolger Boats, combining Small Boats and The Folding Schooner." From the index it appears Moccasin first appeared in "The Folding Schooner" so I suspect that has the same write up and pictures.

DGentry posted these several months ago. Maybe he can help; although this isn't the original. . .

The boat is named Yellow Fin (or Fir) and was tied up in a drying inlet when I kayaked around in search of it. I assume it's not the original Alert, and it makes me happy to see another boat built to this design. It's quite elegant and cool, in Bolger's book - more so in person.
    Anyway, here are some pics.

Mmmmm! Pretty! She looks to be to the "Moccasin" design, but she's not the original "Moccasin"; different hatch and lacks the seahorse carved on the rudderhead. Looks like she has conventional booms instead of sprits, too.

Original MOCCASIN should still be in Chesapeake area. Check with Zimmermann Marine ?

Second MOCCASIN is indeed in B.C. as shown above.

Why only two so far ?

He contacted me because he saw this thread and was curious himself. I heard a rumor a while ago that she may be owned by a school now...?

If this is the boat I think it is, then yes she is still on the Chesapeake. I'll see if I can find more details...

I'm having trouble with the image hosting, but above is a link to pics taken a few days ago. Moccasin is fine, she's getting some work done on her over the last season, and has a wonderful caretaker who appreciates her heritage.

The current owner (caretaker) said her mizzen is Junk rigged, FYI, which I thought was interesting. And the Rudder carving is just amazing.

Very happy to see she is doing well. I hope to see her in person one day, too, as I don't live too far from the Chesapeake.
Yup, that's the coolest rudder head ever.

    Here ya go . . .

Thank you both. She's one of my favorite Bolgers.
