Just what the heck is Irish velvet, why would I need it, and where can I get?

Irish velvet is usually red and used on upholstered furniture in bawdy houses. Irish felt is black and used on boats for bedding ballast keels, deck canvas, and other things.
Abstract algebra is an oxymoron, or maybe a redundancy. Not recommended for marine use.
