Default SF Gunkholing June 15-20, 2008

I'm signed up for the week-long SF Maritime Museum's Gunkholing trip in the Delta - should be quite a trip!

This year they are trying something new, starting and ending at the
same marina, Eddo's near Antioch. This means several days of upwind
sailing in our small boats, so we shall see how it all works out. We
have the scow-schooner Alma and several chase boats to help us out if
    needed.

I'm working on tweaking my boat's gear, and built a new whisker pole
    and sunshade/bimini-thingie last week.

Canoeyawl will be there, not sure if any other Forumites are attending.

My biggest concern is the heat = I grew up in the Central Valley and did quite a bit of summer boating in the Delta 15 years ago, but dealing with 100+ degree weather is a potential problem when you are sittin' in the sun all day...

That photo was taken on Thurs afternoon, when it was just beginning to really heat up. I was missing the bimini I used to have on my SJ21 for Delta cruising.

I think that's _Annie_, will have to check my own photos to see if I've got anything decent of her.
    Here's "searoom's" photo of her -

This is Anne, a Bud Mackintosh sloop rigged as a yawl.
The other double ended ketch I do not know the type, but she has a little diesel inboard and has just been revived - a lovely vessel indeed.

Thanks, any more info. you have on Annie would be great. She looks like centerboarder,if so, with that sail area[looks like their reefed sailing in the delta!] and low freeboard I'm thinking she would be shall we say, exciting, in the cut out on the bay,but she would fit right in up here on the sound. About that “Yawl”…
By consensus the best guess is a variation of a No Man’s Land boat.
It is fitted with a small air-cooled marine diesel inboard right aft, (Petter- I think) a tidy installation.

The boat has recently undergone a major conservation effort including new canvas decks, toe rails, carlins, paint and brightwork, sails, some bronze castings, and etc. etc. The helm has been repositioned with control lines from an original push-pull tiller.
She is a thing of beauty now eh?

Todd Bloch has posted a great video and selection of photos -- some nice ones of the boat being discussed above -

The older gent playing the guitar is Ramblin' Jack Elliot, and the "Rock Me Mama" song played at the end became our unofficial our theme song, played every night by one of the Park personnel to popular acclaim.

Thorne, is this event likely to happen this coming summer...2011? I would sure be interested in participating, if it was.

That makes a number of us. Don't think it will happen but I'll post something here if it looks like it might.

If it doesn't, I have a friend with a Cheoy Lee Offshore 48 who would probably enjoy being the motherboat as long as people didn't go too hog-wild with the extra gear. We could do a 4-day weekend, mini-version on our own, or maybe under the banner of the TCSA?.

BTW, "Sally" is gorgeous, just beautiful. What is she? Looks like a canoe yawl.

Thanks for the pictures, Thorne. I just now watched the 2007 and 2008 videos. That stuff is just my speed. Tell me - how would a Shellback fare? Maybe not starting from SF, but in the Delta itself?
