I suggest the column be called The Poop Deck, as Mr Kasanof already has Fo'c's'le and Classic Boat has its Stern Post column. It could even be (mainly) about cruising skinny waters. There could be write in competitions, and I already know what the prizes would be...

And so, on this, the first rather coolish day of our late sub-tropical (and very wet) summer when we realise that we soon have to go down to the paddock and fetch up some firewood from the tailings pile, having fair-welled a bunch of happy forumites just this yesterday, we turn our attention to those Northern climes; up there on that thawing Tundra we called Lemmonhandland... A Bolger skinny water cruiser is about to take to its natural element again...

Indeed! What's up? I put on my best Garrison Keillor voice for the above post and all!

Peter's posting everywhere else other than here. Is it still snowing up there on the tundra? Should search parties be sent out into the drifts?

What a happy coincidence flyinwall! Nat and I were just scaring ourselves this past evening making lists of what has to be done. Keep in mind too, we really cannot launch much before the 15th of May, the opening day at the club. But if it can be any comfort, I am pleased to report I have begun tackling one of the jobs already on the list;the dinette table. I have been taking pictures too, for the print impaired, and will post as soon as I have the dinette table done. Say by the middle of next week?

The abstract might read as such: After two failed attempts toward attaining a perfect finish on his dinette table and putting up with the less-than-perfect results for the duration of the post launch season, a ten thumbed fool is forced to undertake drastic measures to remedy the problem before the begining of another season on the water.

    Cheers!

Mr. Gibbs, my dear swamp dweller extraordinaire, I am pleased to announce our winter has ended and in a most glorious fashion! Indeed, this past week has seen the snows miraclously transformed into water and vapour due to natures' gracious sudden gift of un-seasonably warm temperatures. Aye, we went all the bleeding' way up to a tropical 25 C !! I thought of you too, labouring in such heat, and wanted a beer straight away!

Oh my,search parties? Could be fun if they showed up with chilled racks, grub and spoke with a curious accent! But no, none will be needed really. I have been found, despite being unsound in so many other ways, guilty of a laziness not seen since 9 days prior to the fall of the holy roman empire. And that was a loooong time ago!

I am honoured by your posting, Mr.Gibbs.

    Cheers!

I'd suggest that what really makes a writer is purely the appreciation of the reader!!!

By that measure Mr Lenihan, you certainly a writer make!!!! No-one is pizzing in your pocket when they say how much they/we enjoy your thread and your posts elsewhere.

Get your ten thumbs busy on the keyboard mate, I for one would become a far more regular WB buyer if you did.....(I must confess to being only a very sporadic buyer at the moment.....criminal I know, but that's how it is.)

BTW, are the waters very high right now at your end? They aren't so much at this end. I hope we don't go through a low water Spring like a few years ago!Peter

Sounds like a deal. I am remodeling a bathroom for the Mother in Law the next few weekends, but after that it's time to play boatbum! Standby for pics!

I am not sure about the water levels, but will check into that... (SevenSundays has a 5 foot draft!)

Your timing is perfect Andy, for after the next few weeks has passed, the weather will certainly be much warmer and really conducive to playing boatbum. 5 foot draft, you say? My condolences.........

Pray for high waters this Spring!

This is the original plastic-mini-guy-makes-sawdust-thread but it has come to my attention that others are blatantly copying Mr Lemonhand's trademarked, patented and copyrighted theme of mayhem and plastic toys.

One such disgraceful copy-cat can be found here
    http://www.tdpri.com/forum/2012-tdpr...ld-thread.html

It's not the high quality we are accustomed to here as wood butchering connoisseurs, but it might perhaps tide us over until the Return of the Bates and it is, in it's own way, drōle and somewhat amusant.

I can only speak for myself and my little Microtrawler build.......there comes a time when endless hours of sanding followed by endless applications of more applications of more epoxy followed by, gulp, more sanding and long boarding and.............. well, there comes a time when one has to just walk away for a renewal. Just speculation but I'd imagine that Peter has been working on those small details and is compiling the info and photos as we type and read this very moment!

I think that when the trees are in full bloom and the pollen is raging that we will finally see a Mr Lenihan appearence. And the wait for us readers will again be worth it, full of new adventures in sawing, cutting, sanding, beer drinking and Simon-baiting!

    Take Care,

I'm hypothasizin' here but methinks Cap'n Lemonhands and his crew have been lost! I suspect he pulled Turtle Bay out of its winter berth and turned right instead of left and was flushed down the Lachine Rapids!

    Somethin' like this!

    Howdy folks,

Sorry about the long absence but my better half discovered she had lots of accumulated "time owed" days in her bank(several weeks worth) and had to use them or lose them before the first of May. I too still had some vacation time remaining from last year so we buggered off for a bit.

At any other time, I would have dived right into boat work stuff, with both feet wiggling, and gotten to work on finishing details.Oddly enough, this time around found me awash in a veritable sea of sloth. I could hardly muster the will to bring a beer to my filler hole, much less drag my hairy rump to the boat yard.

But things are about to change really fast. The new season begins May 15th at the club and I wanna be there! A load of stuff to deal with before re-launching and pictures starting tomorrow!

    Cheers!

Holy smokes, another one! YIPPEE! Are you going to pull the trigger and start any time soon? Will you be going with the full four season version or just keep it simple and go for the tropical version?

This is all very exciting! So many questions! I believe if you look near the top left hand corner of the phonebook, you'll see the section for "Discount Boatbuilding Supplies" just before the "Divorce Lawyers" section. I'm certain that is the section your good spouse hoped you would notice.Lucky devil!

Feel free to fire away with any questions about her build and I'll do my best to answer them well.

    Cheers!

You are are all too kind with your concerns folks and I'm sorry it has some frettin' but things happen when one has loads of new found free time and it isn't always boat related, rats!

If it can be of any help at this late date, the best fix I've found for a dose of the frettin's has always been multiple doses of glass bottled liquid medicine. With any kind of luck, a few closely timed doses of medicine will find you whistling brightly as you sail along on a rising ocean of care-free abandon blissfully hollering out,"What the blue ball blazes was I frettin' over anyway, Marge?"

Talking of imbibing liquid medicine, a very fine gentleman has sent me a voucher for the purchase of one bottle of good single malt whiskey. This is to celebrate the pouring of my ballast last week...yep, I finally got a dry day.

    Hi Gary,

Nice to read you and I'm going to have to check out your progress later! I hope things are going well and that you get to launch her soon...er....wait a minute...isn't it almost winter down there? What a hardy bunch you folks are to carry on like that!

A small correction if I may, regarding "created a monster" ; I used to think this thread was nothing more than my simple way of returning the favour, since I have so enjoyed so many fine and interesting threads before ever starting this one a few years ago. Amazingly, folks enjoyed this thread and over time the darned thing just kept growing. I think what has been created,if anything, is more a "community of like minded nuts" and this is good or at least a wee bit better than monsters. All they ever usually do is eat small children, destroy entire villages and kidnap the blond haired vixen.

    Cheers!

You created one of the finest threads on the forum Peter. Very informative and highly entertaining, I for one would be happy to see it continue. With lots of photos of your cruising ground.

Ah, now there's a pleasant sight, sitting over there on the other side of the bar! He hadn't been propped up in his favourite corner for a few weeks now, but I'm glad enough to see him back, I think I might just have to have a celebratory rum! Cheers Peter, and to your good health, and wonderful summer on the water!

Well, this sure feels strange, getting back to posting pictures. One would have thought,"Enough already!" But kinks need to be worked out with a new boat, especially when built by a clodhopper. This new chapter will see how it all will be worked out to the satisfaction of,the Queen, the surveyor, the insurance company and me.

We'll start with satisfying the Queen, a very good idea and an excellent means of slowing down the growing numbers of lumps on my otherwise hard and true skull.

Some of you die hard and trusted followers of this thread may recall this photo, taken during Turtle Bay's maiden trip from the yard to the club. Some even opined on how fine the finish appeared on that dinette table. Let me now state that the only reason the finish appeared so brilliant was because I own just about the cheapest and nastiest camera around. I'm amazed I haven't punched its' lenses out yet........

Any way, the surface was far from fair and was loaded with all sorts of problems readily visible to anyone seeing it up close, like the Queen, invited guests and slow drinkers given to gazing down at their drinks. For the sake of information, the finish seen in this photo was after my SECOND attempt at getting it to be perfect, just like the literature, promo video and web page of the product promised. I'm such a sucker for a good sales pitch!

And this is why I found myself out in my parents yard, in late March, wearing a t-shirt and working up a sweat during a record breaking warm spell which saw the temps here in the high 20's C. The snow hard all vanished and one would have thought it was late May or early June.

If one looks closely along the near edge of the table, it is possible to see the un-sightly and plain ugly surface this product produced, even after the second attempt. The white opaque far end of the table is just where I had started sanding but stopped to take a couple of photos before the evidence was removed.

Similarly here, the table was dotted with these outrageous dimples randomly present over the surface.

At this point, I had pretty much resigned myself to the not too unenjoyable task of simply sanding off the finish and giving it one more go of it.After all, I'm no stranger to sanding and sort of missed it over the winter months.

What should have taken no more than a long hour's worth of easy work turned into a saga. Four hours into the sanding and all I had managed to accomplish was to remove the gloss from the high spots, barely reaching the bottoms of the various defects. My thoughts drifted through famous curses and vulgarities aplenty as I tore off a multitude of spent sandpaper and loaded up with a fresh ones. Little beads of sweat played hide and seek with my eyes.Little Petey was slowing being transformed into a grunting brute!

Eventually, as the afternoon wore on and my mouth was begining to feel like the Bonneville Salt Flats, my dear mother came out back and asked in that special, innocent, way,"Are you just about done Pete? Your father will be needing his nap." My experienced ears heard,"Shut that damned sander off before I go crazy!"

Unable to come up with any good reason to even bother carying on with this sanding session from Hell, I packed it in and headed for home. Several cold beers later,I felt refreshed and hopeful for the following days' progress with the table.

    To be continued.........

    Cheers!

Peter, you're definitely a sanding junkie! Hope you have a good mask with a straw hole in it, just to keep the throat moist.
