Ah, Merci beaucoup a votre response, monseigneur Lendsonmain!

As for the particle mask, it is what I usually use too. For larger jobs in small less ventilated places, I even use special gas/particle filters. For my (anti H&S) metal working mate told me that those stainless fumes and dust are quite dangerous....

Funny, when I heard the new a while back (about a German company that had invented a water soluble bikini) I had to think of you.
Something to do with you describing the looks of an epoxy dumping spot I believe. Florida sure is a nice place isn't it

This is the stuff which will "wipe that grey right outta my hair "...ahem...rather begin to put a more mirror-like and shiny finish to my two air intake pipes.

See? Already things are starting to look brighter, shinier and prettier than I would have thought possible.

Next down the line is going to be the blue rouge and then followed by a white rouge. Mad,mad, mad this shiny business is.Pure madness!

And that is how I likes it too!!!

    Cheers!

    Peter[/quote]

Pete you crazy mad bastard. You don't know me but I have seen your name everywhere unfortunately, and admire your madness. Pure, unhindered and proud dementia.Truly inspiring.
Say, do you think you should use something between the scotchbrite and the vert rouge? I still see some swirly scratches there and whatever scratches are visible when downgritting ,or getting finer, stay there for all time reminding one of how they missed a stage.

Back to waxing the carrot...I mean, polishing the pipes! The fun thing,so far, has been discovering all sorts of new stuff I never knew nor had reason to want to know. For example;I lately found out about a whole string of small muscles in my hands and wrists I never really knew about yet have been carrying them around pretty much since birth. Thanks to almost a weeks' worth of sanding these pipes, I now know of their existance along with their exact location!

I've also discovered that not all pipes are created equal. In fact, one of my pipes had a fair number of deep scratches on it.Probably from handling it on or off the delivery truck. This inspired a different approach to the polishing pleasures previously posted.Positively pickled, was I , for it was this new polishing position which lead to the new muscle discovery mentioned above.

Without going into too much detail, this pipe was hand sanded with the following before any rouge was applied.First with a medium weight emery paper, then a fine weight emery paper then successively followed with 120 wgt,180 wgt,220wgt,400 wgt and 600wgt wet/dry paper. I would be lying to you if I said it was fun. By the end of the day, my hands were black,my shirt was blacker and my thoughts toward that pipe, blacker still!

Thank God I don't do this for a living!

Here we see some blue buffing compound, the stuff that follows the green compound and what I thought was the final step until being informed that white compound is the new final step.(Thank you Eric D. for shortening my life span, if by only a few hours!)

And here we see the results of the blue stuff. Hard to pick up, really, just how nice it looks with this stupid camera.

If you look toward the far end, it really is very very shiny!

But if we look closely here, at the near end, there are still some very minor swirls on the surface.

Seeing these swirls, after almost going blind from the reflected light coming off the surface of the pipe, would have normally seen me reaching for something else to polish off(comes in glass bottles) while contemplating heaving myself off the nearest bridge. Fortunately, however, I was able to console myself with the thought that seeing how I've two rings to get welded onto these pipes and the welding will surely mess up the polished surface thus obliging me to polish it up in the vicinity of the welds, I'll save the final perfect mirror finish(with the white stuff) for later. That last bit of rationalization allowed me a nice untroubled sleep later that night with only my arms moving to and fro in a steady and familiar pattern. My gf hardly noticed!

    Cheers!

Just to round out the buffing toys, the following are the "tools" used when working with the buffing compounds.

Great little pad which screws onto any 5/8" right angle grinder.

You have to buy the felt buffing pads(left) to go with this particular pad(right). The lime green material on the pack of the felt buffing pad is a type of Velcro.

The felt buffing pad, as seen from forward, has a nice hole located dead center, which helps locate the pad properly onto the orange sanding disk, seen here with its' matching Velcro like patch.

The black coloured pad on the right is a used felt buffing pad. Regardless the colour of your buffing compound, they all turn to black when being used.I've been told the "key" to successful buffing is to develope enough heat on the buffing surface. That is, you have to apply enough pressure on the buffing pad once you've applied some compound to the felt to get the surface nice and hot. I imagine the purpose of this is to melt away all the wax-like substance holding the grit to the stick. Mind you that is just a guess on my part. I really do not know, but it worked much better once I did begin applying very firm pressure onto the spinning buffing pad.

A side view of a cotton buffing pad. Designed for use with a conventional drill. I'll be finding out how well this "tool" works once the pipes come back from the shop with their welded on rings.

The pipes have been picked up and brought back to the pipe store for the welding on of the rings. The rasp file seen here clamped to the mini work bench was used to re-fresh the felt buffing pad every so many minutes or so of use as I found the pads' surface would soon take on a glossy slick surface and the polishing not be so rewarding as the wax built up in the felt.

    Cheers!

Them pipes are looking great, monseigneur.

I am not familiar with those buffing pastes you are using, but if you want to make it even more perfect (not sure if that is possible), you could try Autosol polishing paste and finish it with their stainless steel protective oil. It is a dry oily stuff that protects fairly well. I like it a lot on stainless.

Glad and relieved to read you've got the cap Candyfloss! The good folks at the Canadian Postal Service assured me it would get there sometimes before the end of January, claiming I was too late for the Christmas rush!!!!

Now,about those pipes. I've not told anyone in my family about them for fear it would just confirm further what they may well already suspect. Afterall, only a raving fool would...ahem...polish bloody pipes! I mean, really now. What was I thinking? Or was I even thinking at all ?!(don't answer that last one!)

It would be nice if this sort of craziness or eccentricity, as you call it, were rarer...but then I'd be out of a job! Long live unblinkered madness!!

As autumn wends its' way slowly but predictably through the month of November, with the days becoming cooler and the nights dipping bellow freezing, the thing I notice the most is the changing light. Long shadows are still hanging around the yard when I get there in the morning and they return by mid-afternoon to announce the approaching darkness. The net effect of this is to leave one with the sensation that the days are flying right by! The troubling part however is that you become painfully aware of how much less you are accomplishing due to the shortening of the daylight hours.

But all is not too bad. This new low light of autumn does cast a wonderful spell within the bowshed and produces fresh shadows on long familiar surfaces allowing one to further enjoy pleasent views almost forgotten from last autumns passing. In fact, the atmosphere created within the bowshed is most conducive to quite contemplation while one savours the rich textures of a musty Port all the while marvelling at the wafting streams of cigar smoke being cajoled along by the gentle thermal drafts in the shed.

It was precisely during one of these most recent reflection sessions, shortly after the departure of the stainless steel pipes, that I found myself wondering;if the planet is spinning around its' axis at a rate much faster than the speed of sound, then why the hell are we not rendered deaf from one long and never ending sonic boom? Taking another dip from the Port tumbler, I leaned back into my happy chair(no moaning chairs permitted in my bowshed...they're for wimps!) and attempted to listen carefully through the noise of the boat yard, just in case I was missing it.Looking upward from my reclined position, as if expecting to "see" the sonic boom, my eyes came to rest on the outside of the forward cabin bulkhead. Without trying too hard, my eyes soon focused on the staving awash in warm low level light.

And that is when it hit me. The nice even rows of small black holes I was begining to admire along the staved surfaces were in fact empty screw holes not yet bunged! Feeling a slight stiffening of my back muscles, I immediately sat up straight, polished off the remaining Port and said, while shoving the cigar back into my pie-hole,"Tabernacle de Christ! Comment j'ai fait pour oublier ca? Maudit merde!"

With urgent commands now scooting back and forth between my two neurons and orders fired off down nerve sytems various, I got my shit together tout de suite!

With the combination bit and counter sink cranked into the drill chuck, I haul my sorry ass up into the forward cockpit and prepare to re-discover the pleasures of bung hole cutting. The mystery of the sonic boom would have to wait for another lazy moment in time to arrive!

Here we can see the forward face of the cabin bulkhead, just bellow the helm station window, with the bung holes freshly made. Notice how they are staggered left and right along each stave? With traditional boat building this is done to prevent a plank from splitting due to the creation of a perforated line. Here, it is done for that reason(more or less since it is unlikely a plank bedded in epoxy will split) and also becuase it looks more boaty like. I like things that look boaty, simple chimp that I am!

Here we see the staves bellow the main cabin door frame and my ever faithful heater....just to knock off the chill.

    Above the main cabin door...............

and over the helmstation window. The plastic you see is drapped over the entire length of the boat and is being used to temporarily hold the heat inside the boat until I get the window glass installed. It is a toasty 25C inside! Once the bungs are in, the epoxy cured and the bungs cut down flush,I'll be going over the entire surface to clean up the grooves and remove the remaining epoxy excess.

What a pretty sight!Wooden bungs huddled together in excited anticipation of a good resting home soon to arrive. What a treat to be once again doing something with wood again after the dirty, stinky and damned near crippling exercise of polishing intake pipes!

Seeing how this last bit of stave bunging is really really the last of the stave bunging fun started last winter(Yikes!).....how about a little contest to reward those who have followed this thread since the begining and went through the whole mind numbing foolishness of the staving madness?

    Alright then, here it is:

The first one to guess the actual number of bungs used on this boats' total staving wins a laughing polar bear baseball cap! The first one to get the precise number will have a choice between either black or green.Should the precise number not be guessed, the prize will go to the one closest to the actual number but I will get to chose the colour! Just to give everyone a fair chance of it, this contest will close on December 1,2009 Also, in the spirit of craziness, entrants are encouraged to offer up more than one guess!

    Good luck to all!

    Cheers!

    Peter

P.S. This"contest" is not an official WOODENBOAT MAGAZINE contest. It is strictly a thread specific bit of fun offered by this threads originator. All complaints, questions and legal doubts should be addressed to Tenner

Thanks Darren for the compliment about the polishing! I wouldn't however be too quick about admiring my"work ethic".....them's big words and complicated too. Just look at the above staving post as proof positive that I have barely a thread of work ethic and if I have any at all, it is made out of pure elastic

You used 1,266 bungs on the staving. 1,296 if you count the part you ripped off.

Sir Peter, when those pipes come back from the shop, you can expect to see blue discoloration.
This can be removed with scotchbrite or polishing, again…. Maybe the guys at the shop already did it for you, as it is a lot easier to remove when still warm.

Candyfloss, I am rather curious about the cap. Could you show us a pic of the potential prize, preferably worn by a New Zealand hottie?

My guess for the bungs: three.

Alrighty!!! The ball is off and rolling with a noble effort by BETTY-B! However, Dan does introduce a potential area of contention. To wit;errors, goofs and gaffs on my part. The contest is to guess the correct number of bungs finally and actually installed and NOT the number of bungs gone wrong, destroyed, removed or otherwise no longer present in the staving.

Only 12 days left so guess early and guess often!

    Baron Biscuit,
Thanks for the heads-up regarding any discolouration which may appear on the pipes due to the welding. It would be nice if they took care of it for me but I do expect to have a bit more polishing to do when the pipes return as it is......I still have the white compound stage to do

CANDFYFLOSS, RE: Cap model. The fine alluring model used to display your exquiste treasure of a dinghy would serve handsomely for Baron Biscuits' request, don't you think?

And finally,Baron Biscuit, as regards your bung guess, we can have a joke contest after the holidays.......and you can be the judge too! I'll supply the cap

Speaking of the bungs, here they be, laid to rest for an eternity.

Just to be consistent, these photos appear in the same counter clock-wise order as the previous photos, in this digital world!

Here we can see the bungs, just bellow the helm station window, set it wood flour thickened epoxy and with their grains aligned with the staving grain,as it should be, right Mr.Gibbs.....

They become almost invisble to the casual eye if installed that way. Here we see them resting bellow the main cabin door entrance.

Above the main cabin door entrance.

And finally, above the helm station window.

I'm so tempted to tell ya how many bungs were used just on this bulkhead alone ta give ya some hope and inspiration but..........t'wouldn't be fair now, would it?! Nah, t'wouldn't be fair t'all, it wouldn't. I'll have ta go back to me sonic boom meditation just ta keep the temptation at bay!

But on the other hand, I could let fly with some mischief and stir up some turmoil while you're busy rustling up some likely bung numbers by showing you these two pictures and leave you wondering something like," What in blazes is that and where does it go on the boat? What the hell is wrong with Tenner and why does he do crazy shit like this just when I almost have my winning guess all figured out!?"

Cheers all and good luck with your guesses!!

    Guesses to date:

    BETTY-B = 1266

    Darren = 866

    marcin = 1397

Yes, you may enter if you've previously won a cap, just choose another colour. No, the ones ruined by Master Bates do not count, see post 1425. And yes, I may be crazier than you think

Thanks to all those who have entered so far and for your compliments(jokes)...you just know it'll only encourage more craziness on my part

Amazing how very close some of you folks are with your guesses. I'm flattered to be in the company of such fine guesstimators!

Don't forget you can guess more than one number, just as long as you do it before the contest deadline of December 1,2009 !

    Cheers! and Good luck!

    1241!
    It's GOT TO be 1241
By the way, that thingie you're wondering about is called a Ledger" as that is exactly the function it performs. Nautical nomenclature should always precise. That's so that in the frenzy of a docking maneuver, Captain Salti doesn't hollar out something stupid to Captain Lemonhands -like "Grab the thing!"

671, It has got to be 671. I think I also know why Capitaine Lendhishands put an extra layer of foil inside the shed..... Just so that we can't hire a satellite for taking pictures and cheat on the contest

Well, crazy enough to count all the bungs in your matchboarding, anyway.

And being that crazy, I'll upgrade my guesstimate to 864. It must be an even number.

The Guess the Number of Bungs and Win a Cap contest.

    Guesses to date:

    BETTY-B = 1266

    Darren = 866

    marcin = 1397

    Saltiguy = 1286,1241,916,1358

    David G. = 944

    Candyfloss = 534,864

    cookie = 671

You guys are good and getting gooder! It also appears that some of you are brain storming this along and that is cool, in a fun community sorta way!

Just in case some may be wondering "What happens if more than 1 person guesses correctly?" No problem! Each correct guesser gets a cap However, if a guesser enters 4 identical enteries of say, 666, and that turns out to be the correct answer, the guesser will not recieve 4 caps no matter how convincing an arguement is offered....unless that arguement is of a liquid nature

    Cheers and good luck folks!!

Despite spending a fun day at a friends' work shop playing with bits of wood, I couldn't shake the nagging notion that I had been a bad,bad person last night for tossing out a teaser question completely unrelated to the bung contest. I know that if it was me who had to guess the correct number of bloody bungs I would feel very much challenged by the teaser question and have evil thoughts about the fool for posting it right smack in the middle of a contest! Yessirree Balzac, I'd be wanting to string him up by his gigantic gronicles and flay him senseless with a sherry soaked string until he could sing Jingle Bells, in French, backwards. I would sleep the sleep of the righteous after that, I tell ya!

So, in an attempt to preserve my humble gronicles for better uses and to avoid wasting good sherry marinating bits of stupid string, the following will illustrate what that little piece of wood was destined for.

Here is the guilty bit, of which two were made and who's purpose is simply to lock in place the legs of the auxiliary motor bracket mount on the transom. I know young Saltiguy probably got a bit confused from all that warm FLA sunshine weighing heavily on his noggin' and thought this was a "Ledger" but anyone who has seen a real "Ledger",even if only in the pages of picture catalogues, knows all too well that the real article is made of finer stuff than this and can, in the right light, even look better!

Tucked away under the aft deck/patio/dance floor/helipad is where the main outboard and auxiliary outboard motors go. Here we see, located on the port side just over the blower compartment, the right side leg of the auxiliary motor bracket mount. Where we see the grey primer sanded off represents the faying surfaces for the three parts of this bracket mount. That "shiny" piece of grey metal is a right angle square just to insure the leg is plumb!

And here we can see the right leg epoxied in place and a generous fillet around the perimeter. Most importantly, we can now see where that little bit of mahogany goes! Screwed and epoxied as it is, beneath the helipad 3X3 support frame, this wee bit of wood effectively locks the leg in place preventing it from being levered off the bulkhead by the weight of a 9.9hp outboard extended outward on its' bracket.

The lower end of the leg seen here along with the hatch cover for the blower compartment(to the left) and the slop well for the main motor(to the right). As you may imagine, with the base of the leg as wide as it is secured atop the blower compartment and the wood bit above, this motor bracket mount ain't goin' nowhere.

The top half of the inside face of the leg. The screws used along the vertical cleat are temporary and used just to snug up the leg into the epoxy while it cures. The screw through the wee bit of wood however will remain there since I'm a bit neurotic.

The lower half inside face. I know some of you may be wondering why the sloppy fillets and my only defense, besides claiming to be a sanding fool, is the tight, barely standing headroom work space and the coolish temperature in the bowshed which tends to hyper-thicken the epoxys' viscosity until some heat is put to it. Thus, my tongue depressor fillet tools had a slight time of it getting a clean swipe. Things will look mucho better once I finish sanding those fillets!!!

    Cheers!

Hold on a moment Lemonhands. First you dismiss my(absolutely correct) answer and call me "confused".
That "thingie", as you call it, is a "LEDGER"
    Comprendo?
I even explained why it's called a Ledger - because that is precisely the function it performs. Then after all that, you have to carry on like Mr Smartypants and "explain" to ME how it's used - AS A LEDGE. Maritime nomenclature is standardized for a reason, so there is NO NEED whatsoever for you to explain to me what a ledger is used for especially when I have already explained it to you

Look through any wooden vessel and you'll find loads of ledgers.

    Dear Saltiguy,

While it must be understood that I in no way intended the word "confused" to be a used as a slur on your otherwise good name, it did present what I thought was a fair description of things regarding your proposing "Ledger" as the proper maritime name for that small bit of wood. However, another door has now been opened by none other than yourself with your claiming my use of the word "thingie". After consulting with my solicitors, friends and the neighbours' cat,"La Grosse Salope", it is indeed clear that I never so much as hinted at the word"thingie"never mind actually using it. This sad state of affairs leaves me with few options and compels me earnestly toward one of the following conclussions:

    A) The ozone layer has gotten terribly thin over FLA and your grey matter is slowly being simmered to a lighter shade of pale.

    B) You are not taking your medication properly.

    C) The herd...I mean Ladies from the Red Hat Society have you counting more than bungs.

    or

D)You need lots more fiber in you diet.

I'm inclined to add an E) "all of the above" but will bite my tongue and use this as another good reason for a mighty gulp of the good stuff, aka, medicine, while you reflect on the best answer for your obvious slip up and false claims.

Trusting all is much better with your physical health and that help will soon be on its' way for your "other" health issues,

    I remain,

    not yet blotto,

The timing of the big blow-out-no-holes-left-unexplored festival organized by Saltiguy and MC'd by Candyfloss down in sunny FLA is almost perfect!!

No sooner had Saltiguy made this announcement, when came drifting in through my bowshed doors the happy sound of yet another supply of crated ports for winters long stay arriving via my usual delivery barge.

Gingerly timing his arrival, my"man" eases the barge ever closer to the ramp for unloading.

The barge comes in nice-n-slow and will soon begin unloading my precious Port supply. I'm so excited I don't know if I should shit or go blind!

I'm so nearly blind with excitement I almost don't notice the barge picking up speed and pulling slowly away..........

Thinking there must be a mistake, I look up at the wheel house and holler up to my "man", "Hey Louis, the ramp is just over here!", I pointed with one of my thumbs," Back her down will ya!!"
He just pointed with a different finger up toward the sky.

Then I spy old Harrold in the engine room doorway with his red jammies on and scream out," Harry ya cheating old whore! Tell Louis I'm sorry for eating all his veggy buggers the last time and to back the barge down now!"

Harrold doesn't say a word and just grabs his crotch to lighten the load.

I begin to run after them but Louis opens her up a bit and they easily pull away, leaving me with a fierce thirst and almost tripping over some of the bigger rocks in the dirt.Suddenly my foot catches something and over I go. Just before I hit the dirt, I let out one final holler," YA BASTIDS!"

    Cheers!

    My Dear Mr.Gibbs,

I have the vaguest of memories of us already having cleared the air,as it were, over this issue of bung orientation. If memory does indeed serve, I believe we, as gentlemen of impeccable honour and Port tastes, agreed to dis-agree on this notorious topic, most litigieux, for the sake of the womenfolk and small children.

This most recent outburst by you suggesting to do it all over again because they are all wrong leads me to conclude I may have been a wee bit hasty in my above stated conclusion. What went wrong? Is your truly wonderful boatshop not yet finished or moving along to your satisfaction? Have you been slumming around with the beer drinking crowd abit too much lately? Does your cat have fleas? Is it too summery for you down there?

As for the very much feared yet esteemed committee, not a peep! Take heed of their silence on this subject Mr.Gibbs and tread gently, for their wrath is not one to be easily endured by mere mortals such as you and I. Trust me on this and consider yourself to have been fairly warned!

If I may be so bold, perhaps it is time for a fine sampling of some foreign Porto(I recommend a tawny,no younger than 10 years, during this time of seasonal transition!) to be enjoyed leisurely while you recline in your favorite chair staring out over vistas which share the very shades of your tawny Port!

As your mind begins to wander,as it surely will with such fine beverage in hand, please do take a moment to exercise that fine mind of yours enough to generate a perfect guess as to the exact number of bungs in place on the staving.Once the magic number has been devined, enter your guess into the cap winning contest! Who knows, yours may be the winningest guess of them all and your dome of thought will hence forth benefit from the protection afforded by such a cap against the ravages of the almighty sun rays down your way!

Wishing you and yours a most enjoyable summer on board the Mighty Pippin,

    I remain,

Darnit floatingkiwi, I'm at my place of work and the powers that be have blocked access to youtube! This will have to wait until I return home later today unfortunately.

Hmmmm.....I just noticed you mentioned it is about a girl singin' about her bum. ! I read it too quickly the first time around and read BUNG, which left me rather perplexed yet excited at the same time! I woulda enjoyed seeing a girl who is as excited about bungs as I is and actually singing about it!

Are ya goin' ta enter a bung guess for the contest? There is still time left, so enter early and enter often!

Unfortunately Peter, I fear there is not too much in the way of green vistas around & about the area where Duncan lives, & by the time this summer is over there will be even less. Blame it on global warming if you like, but "verdant" is increasingly disappearing from the Australian vocabulary.
Would you say that a person who is confident of winning this competition is "bung-ho"?
Enough of the silly semantics. Whats the guess, Duncan?
