What Mr. Ledger said. I can't remember the last time I saw someone so careful with his tape that it lasted long enough to wear out/elongate the rivet holes like that.

I hate like the dickens to suggest anything that'd cut into the Throat Lubrication budget, but I'm pretty sure all of your problems would be solved with a new tape. Spring for a Stanley, they're still the best.

BTW, the committee is loving the fotos!

This is the sequel to my crazy day of measuring madness. Not only was I full of beans when I thought getting out one short stave would be a breeze but just before that bit, I had gone ahead and confidently cut ALL the short stave bits for both windows. "Confidence" came while whistling a happy tune and merrily climbing up the step ladder with ruler in hand and jotting done the measurements for the length of each group of staves before cutting them.

Now, I do not know about you but I can say that when it comes to memorizing a series of numbers I'm just about useless, unless I write them down somewhere. I'm somewhat ashamed of this particular weakness as it has always been a source of grief ,like when meeting "hot chicks" and getting their numbers only to completely forget them later on etc..... For some darned reason, I chose this day to begin practicing little exercises to boost my memory.Soooo,.....instead of sticking to the old tried and true dictum of "measure twice, cut once" I went with "write it down once and try to remember it later". Silly me!!

This is what happens when you stray from ingrained habits and dare to improve yourself. A whole role of short staves on the forward window really living up to their name of "short"! only these are called "Too Short!"

Not by a whole bunch mind you, but way too much to tolerate here! Fortunately, this discovery came the day following the one stave measurement screw up and I was leary of going off too cocky with the epoxy and so had time to properly correct this error.

Measuring everything twice and with care, I cut out a fresh set of shorties and measured them again after cuting them.......just in case!

Then they were marked for the screw hole locations and numbered. The numbering is probably completely unnecessary in this context where there are only six staves all the same length but it helps me to remain focused for some strange reason....

At anyrate, I have survived this little bump in the road and the cost was was not too deleterious in either time or materials. It did however serve as an excellent reminder to me that, while I may appear to be building a boat, in a real boat yard, with real tools and posting real pictures, on a real wooden boat forum I'm still just a "fool in training" and should never forget it! Trust me!

See; a dust, dirt and shaving laddened shop floor! Proof that I am trustworthy.........at least according to Mrleft8s' "Never trust a man with a clean workshop".

    Cheers!

Personally, I don't like the ones with inch/metric markings, because half the time you end up trying to read the tape upside down.

Digital calipers are getting really cheap. I got one for ten dollars as a promotion, a while back. Keep it in the glove compartment, for measuring emergencies. You never know.

    Hi Mr.Ledger,

Yes, I'm guilty as hell of holding on to old things for way too long. I suppose it is a habit picked up from my Dad who used to save everything even to the point of straightening old bent rusty nails with a hammer on the sidewalk and keeping untold gallons of near empty paint cans from the early '60s......just in case! Can't buy a tape measure up here that doesn't have both English and Metric scales on it...government policy

Digital calipers?! That is just what I need now, another tool I won't know how to use properly...just like my dividers! This modern world is going to be the death of me,I tells ya and it is just enough to drive a fella to drink...er...a...wait a minite...I'm already there!!

    Cheers Sir!!

Moving right along with the staving.................

Once my penance was complete and the new correct length shorties were done, it was now time to mix up a small batch of epoxy. Here we see things just on the verge of getting screwed.

and here we see the epoxy and screw session done. Most of the epoxy run out has been scraped off with just the little puddles at the base of each groove left ot be removed before the epoxy cures rock hard. This time too the shorties went in perfectly! I'm pleased.....

Now working at a slow, more thoughtful and focused methodical pace,(see! I really learn't my lesson about rushing too quickly ahead!) some long staves are prepared and set up on the vertical work bench. To wit;the epoxy cup is ready and close at hand, the 3/16 X 3/16 trowel is ready and close at hand, the staves are all properly laid upside down andand ready in the correct order of their installation and a nice cup of Tim Hortons' nerve juice is ready and close at hand.(Excuse for a moment, there's some giggling in the back of the room..... What's that you say? There's a beer bottle on the work bench?! Ah come on you guys!Settle down abit! Everyone knows that is just your run of the mill, standard prop, to give accurate scale to things in the pictures.

O.K., now that the crowd of "experts" in the back of the room have settled, we can see here the upper end of two lovely long staves epoxied and screwd into place.

and their lower ends. Well fitted, well epoxied and well screwed.Just like they are supposed to be. That wasn't too hard now, was it?

    Cheers!

yessirree folks, the fun just doesn't stop around here sometimes!

Just in case some of you are thinking I am being negligent in my ministrations toward the after most section of the starboard cabin side, we can see here more staves have been added and the gap is slowly closing.Having previously installed the very last stave and the window stave on the cabin side, I'm hoping this will naturally keep these"middle" staves perfectly perpendicular to the water line.

    the gap is narrowing....trust me!

The weather here lately has been a real roller-coaster ride ranging from an absolutely balmy +8C on some days and down to -15C on others. Typical nothern Spring swings but good for the maple syrup industry! Even on cold days, with the sun out, my bowshed heats up nicely, as can be seen here on a day when it was -14C and windy outside!

But these temperature Spring swings can have a deranging effect on some folks and I'm suppose I'm not totally immune.Indeed, I'm somewhat inclined to believe that my latest screw ups with the short staves adventure may have been caused precisely by this climatic drama!

Fortunately, every dark cloud has a silver lining and mine is just about blistering my eyes with its' "silverness" as witnessed here:

Late last Fall, I had planted some beer seeds just to see what would happen, being the ever curious cheap guzzler I am, and had all but forgotten about them during the ensuing winter fun that followed. Then just the other day, while sipping on some of Timmys' nerve juice, I happened to look down at my feet and spied these wee sprouts coming up! That is when I recalled my previous Autumns' gardening efforts! The one eyed bandit, who only spoke Fench, sold me those beer seeds and wasn't kidding afterall! They really work! Had I only more faith at the time, I would have bought me a 24s worth of seeds!

I have the feeling this summer is going to a fun one!

    Cheers!

No,nay and never Sir! You are a man of sterling qualities most various. 'Twas the wee chap in the plaid jacket, two seats over, who insists on removing his dentures each time before letting fly with his volleys of tripe, whom I was sarcastically refering to.

Kindly forgive any confusion or insult this may have occasioned upon your good self and trust that I shall,in the future, attempt to be more precise when refering to the back room boys.

Peter, you planted the bottles too close together. Thing to do is pluck out every other one to give the rest room to grow. Either that or transplant them all. The important thing is to get rid of the males, cause if they pollinate, well, you know.

Nice even spacing, though. Use the dividers?

Peter, Whatjamean you can't buy a tape calibrated in Imperial only. Crock of whatever. They are readily available in Ontario. Must be a Quebec thing.

    Mr.Ledger,

As this was my first attempt at gardening and considering the good chance that I was but a victim of some fine charlatanism, I was at first hesitant to ask,for fear of being called a fool, last Fall, for sound gardening tips all the while resisting a strong desire to fire off a PM to Donn However, I do appreciate your tips and will endeavour to make the corrections you suggest.

If you look closely, the beer plant sprouts are all off by about 3/16th....that'll learn me to rely on my Phukin Lufkin tape measure! I'm going to have to get into the habit of carryng my dividers around in my pocket......you know what they say,"out of sight, out of mind" or is that "out of sight, out of my mind"? At anyrate, I'm always forgetting just how very usefull they can be and must begin changng that!

    Cheers!

Well how about that Bob! When I bought mine(20 odd years ago) I desperately wanted one only in Imperial as I am from the pre-metric era but never found one. Not having a need for another tape measure, until most recently apparently, I've not kept abreast of happenings in the busy world of tape measures but will make a point of checking this out when I go to replace the lowly and useless Lufkin I presently own.Nevertheless, things may have changed,as you suggest or Quebec really is different

O.K. now, back to some serious stuff,eh

With luck now firmly on my side and having learn't a good life lesson about hurrying along too fast, I zinged these last 5 long staves into the remaining gap.For reasons I'm still pondering, this last group went in perfectly,as if by magic, without so much as a kiss of the plane. This is a top view of those magic staves.

and this is a bottom view. As you can see, most of the epoxy squeeze out has been scraped off with only the remaining puddles in the "V" groove extremities left to deal with.

Thanks to the time saved with those magical long staves above, I continued to ride the good wave of lady luck and zinged the shorties over the window openings too!

These too went in with little fuss and trimming. It is always a nice feeling and a good day when planned projects go pretty much as planned. It's enough to leave you feeling almost like you actually know what you are doing! But do be carefull of these feelings and use some restraint!

And speaking of restraint, hmmmmmmmm.........gets ya ta almost wondering doesn't it?

    Cheers!

    To close out this weeks' installment, just two pictures of real relevance;

The aft starboard quarter with all the staving in place with screws removed and a rough sanding of the grooves along with some cleaning up of any remaining cured epoxy.

and now looking forward. The next step will be the drilling of 187 bung holes, making the bungs etc before moving the entire mini shelter up forward to commence working my way back aft. I hope to meet my staving about at the half way mark, right where you can see the porthole opening to the top left of the step ladder.

The follwoing pictures are just to satisfy the Intervention Committee insatiable desire for "fotos". One really doesn't,ever, want to get into the Committees' little black book of misdemeanors! Trust me!!!

While pulling out of the boat yard at the close of another busy fun filled day, I noticed the boat yard had taken delivery of a half dozen Canadian Navy whalers used over at the Dorval Canadian Forces Sailing Squadron base for their annual touch-up.These boats get used throughout the summer months and are all sprit rigged yawls made out of fiberglass(Am I allowed to use that word here?!).

At anyrate, I thought some may enjoy seeing them after they got a good sanding and taped off before they get their fresh coat of Navy Grey paint. Interestingly enough, the boats have two types of outboard motor wells. There is this one visible above and,

this one.Note how this one is more streamlined by being located further aft compared to the previous photo which shores a big chunk of the lower hull chopped off.

A peek inside reveals this version to have wooden benches(removed for sanding and re-varnishing) that are secured on the paired flanges along the inside of the hull and the centerboard box.

While this version has fiberglass benches and a tabernacle for the foremast.

I'll see if I can't get some nice pictures of them once they are all finished before they return to the squadron base. That is, unless I receive instructions from the Committee to cease and desist pronto from the "distraction"

    Cheers!

Well well well. Look at that. Progress abounds and what wonderfull progress it is. I have been trying for years to get my garden to grow and all I seem to get is rusty "seeds". What's your secret?
Great to see the progress and I wanted to thank you for the hat. It fit to perfection without adjustment and the shavings were quite a surprise. My wife opened the box in the car on the way home from the post office and nearly made a mess of them all over the car. Maybe it would have been better than the dog hair currently lounging around on my interior but she was able to contain herself, and the shavings. I shall be sure to wear it for futur boatbuilding endeavours. The redbird shall make progress this week as Mel is in Quebec visiting her parents (with our son) leaving me with LOADS of time to get out to the drydock. I'm computerless at home for a while so progress reports will be lacking however progress there WILL be. Great thread, keep it coming.

    Hi Bob,
Just back from the boat and a quick stop at the local Home Depot. You are correct, I'm full of merde because at least 50% of all the tape measures I checked were indeed available only in Imperial measures! However, I only found this out by pulling out the tape a bit to see because on the shell of the tape measure itself would be markings like 16' X 6m X 25mm......which lead me to conclude that things hadn't changed.

    Thanks for the heads up!

At the risk of turning this into another metric debacle thread ( surely not.. too much good humour here), and you prolly do this anyway, should you ever have the urge to measure in metricals... buy a tape in mm not cm. Because cm is for dressmakers.
Not that there's anything wrong with being a dressmaker( it'd be quite fun doing the measuring wouldn't it).

    Hi John B,

Not to be strange or anything but isn't that like saying buy a tape in 1/4 inches not inches because only carpenters use inches ?
As for the the fun part of being a dressmaker"doing the measuring",that is all fine and dandy until someone gets poked by an eight inch ruler suddenly popping up

    Hi Daniel,

Sorry about the shavings,I hadn't considered the box would be opened in a car!

Wish I could be of more help regarding the gardening but I am a newbie at this.Thankfully, I have had some excellent tips from Mr.Ledger concerning how best to go about it and will be able to report on how things are growing in the near future.

With the warmer winds of Spring fluttering the curtains and Summer not too far away, I hope it goes well with your Redbird during your "holiday" and that we will get to see a picture or two of her in her natural setting! Don't forget your camera

    Glad you like the cap!

    Mr. LiquidGardener,

The Committe is placated... for now. Whaleboats are a welcome bit of spice for the curry. There was mixed reaction, however, to the increasing use of your own foin mug. Some thought that so much handsomenissity was distracting from the much-more-important boating shots. And some welcomed the images... thinking (incorrectly) that they made their own visages look good in comparison (the preening, simpering snots!). All the voices in my... er, All the Committee Members, were in total agreement that we look forward with great giggly excitement to the day when we see this beautiful woodworking project splash into its true element... and become... a boat!

Till then, the Committee hoisted a cold one in honor of your marvelous efforts.

I have returned from Mexico and am glad to see your progress is going well, I was happy to see that other members have kept you on track, I was unaware and skeptical of the beer garden stories I have heard about, but after seeing the photos Iam a true believer and will plant next season I am sure that they only sprout during the St Patricks day week. The Cervaza in Mexico was some corona but a lot more douis equis. I tried a beer called a Pacifico and it was very nice, The most exciting part of the trip was my last day snorkeling along the coral and seeing a sea turtle swimming next to me it was about the size of a large serving platter it swam around me twice and then swam away, a awesome way to end a great week.

Welcome folks to another week of staving madness, just about guaranteed to put you right to sleep or have you reaching for the gun....err.....wait-a-minite.....that ain't right.....how about reaching for a bottle of something tasty.Ahhh, now that's more like it !

When we last left off, the aft staving(starboard side) had just been completed and had been given a nice little sanding and clean up.This is what happened next:

187 little bung holes all got made. This is a view looking forward

and this here is looking aft.

Nothing goes better with a bung hole then a good ole fashioned bung I says and looky here, a nice fresh crop of them gotten out of the Sipo cut offs. Am I ever glad I didn't through those bits away!

Sticking to the same procedure for glueing the bungs as the last time( dipping the bungs into a pool of thickened epoxy), things moved along rather predictably. Here is the forward gang at rest.

and this here is the aft gang also in their final resting place. Ya know, from a certain distance I almost like the textured effect of the bungs all standing proud like that.Sorta reminds me of looking at old iron hulls with their rivets neatly lined up. But this is not a hull, just the cabin sides and this gotta be smooth.Real smoooth!

    to be cont'd......,

    Cheers!

Welcome back Darren! Good to read that you had an uneventful(safe) vacation and yes, swimming with a large turtle sounds like a magical way to end and recall this vacation for a long time to come!

Don't feel too bad about being skeptical regarding beer gardens.Like you, I was a non-believer, even after having bought my seeds! But I have a restless mind and an unquenchable thirst and it was these two liabilities which lead me along the dusty road of exploration. Imagine my utter and complete surprise the day I spied those beer sprouts up!

Things just keep getting better everyday around here and I hope it is the same for you out in your neck of the woods!

Now, go put on some shorts and a t-shirt for a nice stroll outdoors just to re-calibrate your body to the fresh tingling reality which is our robust healthy climate, unlike that damp warm heavy air of the South which can drain a man of all his energies......glad you made it back!

    Cheers!

    Thanks Peter

I got accustomed to the weather rather quickly upon my arrival to the Toronto airport , The next morning my car would not start at the hotel after sitting for a week (most likely mad at me for leaving it in a cold country) I had to call CAA and have it boosted . The guy was great but talked to me for an hour in the parking lot and me with no jacket freezing.

    Darren

    PS things are looking great

I have some photos in the bilige

Darren! You evil man you! It took me awhile before it dawned on me which bilge/what bilge you were referring to. How,in the name of all that is pure and holy, can one be sharing a drink with a lovely lady while a veritable 6 pack parks itself right in front of you like that?! Man I woulda been some ticked off having my ocean view blocked like that.......the very least they coulda done was to turn around.....no manners whatsoever...jeeze....some peoples' kids...I tell ya!

Ah the CAA, just a darned good bunch of stand up guys they are and imagine that, he willing took an hour out of his busy day to help you become acclimated right back to health! Lucky you! You must be a Gold Member

    Bung business news carrys on....

Once the epoxy had cured, the following day, the new sander was brought into service once again to do its' work. This is a view looking forward.

Looking upward and aftward(is that a word?) I really like the way this wood,Sipo, looks when freshly sanded. There is a texture present which draws ones hand to brush lightly over it to feel its' powdery smooth surface.Pretty much the way one is drawn to feel the petals from velvety bright flowering plants with ones finger tips. And like them, the sanded Sipo leaves its "pollen" to fill the empty spaces between our fingerprints, like fine coral sand on a sunny beach.

A lower end view of the sanded staving. If one counts backward to the bottom of the third stave from the window opening, you can just make out a small divot on the stave. This must of happened when the piece was getting planed and escaped my notice during the glue up fun until too late! When my gf saw this, she right away began the soothing process for fear that I would be inclined to rip this one out and replace it with an unblemished stave. That is when I was reminded of what a friend once told me about how these sort of things should be left for all to see that it is real wood and not a piece of molded plastic made to "look" like wood. I just hate it when my OCD kicks in but I'm learning to cope!

Views like this help induce a reflective state of calmness....a veritable brook running through the bowshed!

and a gurgling brook to boot! I almost wanted to fashion a quick-n-dirty fly rod just in case trout were lurking! But seriously, when you set up you bowshed, it is good to check the lay of the land so that when Spring melt down begins, you don't get flooded right out of your shop. This photo is evidence of my complete and total lack of any fore thought regarding the lay of the land.....maybe I was too excited during the errection of the bowshed and had my mind on another variety of lay.......hmmm?

    Cheers!

Ya'll recall this bit of wonderful advice? Well I'm here to say that Eric D. is spot on the money with that tip!

Here is the wonderful Sipo flour making machine

Here is the wonderful Sipo floor collecting canister with some flour in it.

and here is an ever growing wonderful mound of Sipo flour in a big wonderful yogurt container. And to think that folks will pay good money to have small bags of wonderful wood floor shipped all over the wonderful world when they can collect this wonderful stuff for free! The wonderful mind or rather, my two neurons, boggle at this very wonderful thought !

This is what two wonderfully boggled neurons, held prisoner in a skull, look like when they are grateful at the same time for a nifty tip

With the staving all sanded purty like, it's time for Cetol Marine

Looking forward after a generous coat of Cetol Marine.I like the way the iron oxides in the Cetol knocks out the pinkish hue of the raw sanded Sipo

Looking aft with the same generous coating....

Still looking aft but from the view of someone sniffing the top of the rubrail...

and a final bit of sniffing but this time looking forward.......I seem to recall reading something on the can of Cetol about working in a well ventilated area....not sure why they say that.....it sorta smells nice....in a maritimey sorta way.......I'm feeling a bit woozy.......oooops!.......there goes lunch.......

No big deal really,it's easier than you think, but it helps if you are a wee bit loony...How did you make out with your "week off "? Did the wood chips inspire and help move things closer to a launching? I hope so, since Spring is begining to come on big time up this way!

    Mr. Greenthumbs,

The Committee seems quiescent for the nonce... but I have a personal question. I haven't seen any recent pictures of your planting area. How's the beer crop coming? It looks so promising in the first shot. I hope you haven't been visited by an infestation of GlassWeevils, or - worse yet - Sap Sucking Beer Borers.

Dear David G or,if I may be so bold, Kind Sir,

I have had rather unquiet slumbers of late, due in no small part, to an ever growing fear! No, not fear of the infinite after life nor fear even of the Intervention Committee. This fear lurks in the furthest regions of my psyche, shallow as it may be, and has begun to drag itself into the stark blazing bright light of reality. To be terribly blunt, for time is brief, I have been duped!! Yes Sir, I in my wide-eyed innocence, who still believes in Leprechauns, the Tooth Fairy and Rudolph, have had the very fondations of my essence tossed about like so much floatsam on a rock bound stormy shore.

That one eyed French charlatan, hereafter and forever to be known as The Bastid , took my hard earned coin in exchange for beer seeds without never ever even hinting at the sex of these seeds!! My naivety in all things botanical must have appeared as clear as a million rain drops on a plate glass window!

Mr.Ledger, sage from somewhere South of me, first broached a concern regarding the very gender of those seeds upon first seeing the early sproutings of a "good" crop. As I hold his opinion in high regard, I took to checking up on my beer plants daily, sometimes even several times a day, attempting to determine the gender of my plants. Lacking the proper training in BS(beer sexing) only made the task that much more frustrating, for all my efforts were stymied by nothing more than my simple ignorance.

Having learnt long ago never to take "no","maybe" or "yes" for an answer, I proceeded to haul up the beer plants, one at a time, to peek quickly at their back sides looking for the telltale signs of genitalia. I was left aghast and my heart raced faster still as each plant was pulled up,back sides raised and only to reveal it to be a male plant!

Like the sun creeping up over the horizon, it slowly dawned on me that all my happy dreams of one day becoming a beer farmer were nothing more than that, just dreams! The Bastid, damned forever as he is, does deserve at least a mild "merci" for the joy those dreams brought to me throughout my hectic days of staving and I have learnt a valuable life lesson. To wit, the next time a one-eyed,French salesman comes along offering seeds too good to be true, let him buy the first round!

Oh, before I forget Kind Sir, you did ask for a photo of the beer garden planting area. Unfortunately, only one photo was rescued from the camera after it experienced a rapid vertical acceleration toward the ionosphere as I went into rather violent apopleptic fit upon discovering the plants to be all males.

Here is your photo Kind Sir:

As one can plainly see now, the buggers were ALL males. This left me with the awful task of having to literally twist off their wee heads and drain them of their blood for fear of spreading contamination elsewhere. While I may not be the most conscientious environmentalist, I at least recalled reading a pamphlet once of how to properly dispose of these liquid toxins.

I trust your question has been answered to your exquisite satisfaction and that all is well out in Port Land.

    Cheers!
