well, today (as advertised) i begin constructing the strongback for a version of a "cape cod oystering skiff." this boat will be 16'x4'6. the difference in the design is mine will use leeboards instead of a c/b, and have a less-deep skeg (initially, at least.) still haven't made a final decision on the sail rig. cypress on syp, sticking with southern wood for a southern boat seems to make sense. even have the name picked out.

Good on you! Pictures are required. No mention of building a cypress skiff unless we get pictures! Glad to see somebody is putting cypress in a boat instead of kitchen cabinets.

just got off the phone with the lumber guy and the wood is best grade--cabinet-grade, i reckon. don't ya'll think it's the best for a boat down here? why waste it indoors, why use plywood(n't)?

I don't know any better, so I'll ask. Should you use kiln dried wood or green cypress? Cabinet lumber will be kiln dried, won't it? I am probably off, here, but I'd think building green it won't move as much when wet.

And, please, pictures. This sounds like a boat I've wanted to build for some time now... except replace "Cape Cod" with "Chesapeake Bay", and "oystering" with "crabbing."

For my edumacation... is it better to use green wood for a skiff? I suppose a trailer skiff would be a different answer than a boat kept in the water. Curiosity.

i think.... dried is better for a dry-sailed boat. green will shrink when it gets a chance-no?

Cypress galley lockers works for me. Alas, about a zillion board feet of decent cypress is going into homes annually.
