    Default # 202, T. Jackson's Dilemma

Anybody here read Tom Jackson's article yet ?

I vote for the the Sprit Ketch with jib rig and sliding gunter mizzen for his Nomans land boat.

Reefing the sprit rig seems to have a bad rep. If done frequently and with a well rehearsed efficiency it works OK. Beside dropping the main all together and sailing with Jib and Mizzen is fast and efficient.

    Thumbs up Re: # 202, T. Jackson's Dilemma

I guess this well written article hasn't been read by too many here, as yet . ( I assume WB still has distribution problems) But our senior editor goes into the advantages and disadvantages of various rigs for his new boat.

I read it...great article for me as it related well to my search for a rig that will fit my Maine Coast Dinghy design I am working on...a lug-yawl probably. He went with the dipping lug ketch...a powerful rig but how will it go up wind. I like the balanced lug-yawl b/c you can get the luff tension you need to point while also have a decent downwind rig...it was interesting to see that this was not his choice, in fact he dis liked this rig. We'll se it at the SRR this year along with 58 other boats!

    Cheers,

It must take a while to get our copies out West here. I'd be willing to pay a little extra to have it carted over Panama rather than having to wait so long for it to go around the Horn.

My WB just came today, so I've just now finished the article.

I'm surprised a little that he didn't refer to L. F. Herreshoff's drawing of the No Man's Land boats which were in his book _The Compleat Cruiser_, and earlier, I presume, in Rudder magazine.

LFH shows two low, almost level headed spritsails, with a boom on the mizzen and the fore overlapping.

As for the upwind capability of the dipping lug, I think this would be where it would really shine.

Well , did it finally arrive yet.

I wonder just how many printing houses distribute the book ?
