Sorry if this is off topic, but do you have any further info ont "Big Suprise"? I don't see it on Atkin's site. I have been considering the purchase and pursuit of Suprise for a few weeks, and I'd like to compare the two before making a decision...

There were quite a few modifications to Tilikum, including added freeboard and ballast. It was 38 ft long, I recall. That's still not much sail for a 38er. One wonders if the sails would catch any wind at all in the wave troughs. Apparently it pointed into the wind brilliantly with just the mizzen, waiting out gales.Comment

The specs on the website list this as having a 7 foot, and Watercraft lists this as 6 foot. The Watercraft article was published in 2006. I assume the plans you would get are for the beamier boat. I wonder if the sail area has been increased. Anyone buy these plans yet?If he ever drinks the brew of 10 tanna leaves, he will become a monster the likes of which the world has never seen

Heard from Reuel, he says this could also carry a cat ketch rig.
I might be tempted to shorten the cabin to just a cuddy, or do away with it completely and use some kind of tent/canopy setup for sleeping on deck. That cabin is pretty small (low)If he ever drinks the brew of 10 tanna leaves, he will become a monster the likes of which the world has never seen

Getting ready to start this project. Would anyone favor building it right side up? I realize it would make sheathing it in Xynole and epoxy more difficult but... But maybe I'd opt to sheath only the bottom and garboards (box keel) for abrasion, in which case I could build those upside down, sheath, then turn it over before attaching station molds.
I welcome you opinions and derision....If he ever drinks the brew of 10 tanna leaves, he will become a monster the likes of which the world has never seen

I ordered a set of plans for this boat with the idea that I would pass them on to my brother-in-law, but i am giving them a good look in the meantime. It really is a lovely design. It's a bit tempting to scale down my ambitions from the bigger boat, something about this boat grabs me. The design is subtitled "Mocrocruiser" and in the design/construction notes the designer say that he would't hesitate to sail it through the Bahamas.
Anyone else out there ordered a set of plans? Is it a boat you'd be like to build/own?If he ever drinks the brew of 10 tanna leaves, he will become a monster the likes of which the world has never seen

I compared the mast height of the boat posted here to the one on the plans and found that Mr. Parker has drawn the mast taller. Dividing the mast height of the boat here into the 23 ft. length, I got 2.32. Dividing the mast height into the 23 ft. on the plans I received I got 1.93. I appears that the changes made from the original design are an extra foot of beam (from 6 to 7 ft.), and greater sail area. This may overcome the feeling here that the boat was under canvassed. It also makes it look better all around. If he ever drinks the brew of 10 tanna leaves, he will become a monster the likes of which the world has never seen

I had not realised the boat had been updated. Certainly an extra foot of beam would add to space below and some stability while also allowing for rig change. The 33 is a major build, even if its of a simplistic nature. I would certainly consider a stretch on the smaller boat; and probably would consider anything over 8ft in beam to be less than ideal for trailing to new areas, if that was your thing. Watched a video on utube the other evening of a couple with a Norsea 27, drove over 2500 miles with it on a trailer to sail just 210nm (on a 4 month vacation)!
Granted the bigger boat would allow some more comfort, but thats an individual thing.Comment

I used tracing paper to draw it stretched 10%, it seems like a good idea that doesn't hurt the boats appearance., I'd leave the cabin the same size and so gain in cockpit area and also a bit of foredeck. The jib would grow a little. I also might contrive a small mizzen, and make it a yawl.If he ever drinks the brew of 10 tanna leaves, he will become a monster the likes of which the world has never seen

Re: 23' Seabright Skiff By Reuel Parker
I was planning on building Parkers Seabright 33, but last November I had a medical issue that has made me rethink things and I am now considering building the Seabright 23. I have a set of plans, the revised plans which have an increased beam (7ft). But of course, never wanting to leave well enough alone, a mild case of 2 foot-itis set in and I'm thinking of enlarging the boat by 10% over all. Do you see any serious drawbacks to doing this? Fo instance how much would I have to increase ballast (500lbs)? And sail area which is currently just 132 sq. ft? Some here have commented here that the boat is under canvassed as drawn. A mizzen could be added or perhaps the sails could be sized up 10%.
Alternatively, I could just lengthen the boat by 2 feet, but I like the beam to length ratio of the boat as drawn, and enlarging by 10% overall gives a fair bit of extra elbow room and retains the pleasing proportions.
Any input would be appreciated. If he ever drinks the brew of 10 tanna leaves, he will become a monster the likes of which the world has never seen
