This woman, Ruth Bernhard, who lived to 101:

specialized in photographing the female nude. She took the process out of Weston's context and into a new realm:

Her father designed one of the most beautiful fonts still in use today - Bernhard Modern.

Well I happen to believe that this displays true beauty also. It's tastefully done and there's a bit of wood in there too.

    DON'T LOOK ETHEL!!
HA, Katherine (youngun that she is) "got" my subject header!

I must say I'm happily surprised by how this thread has gone. I do wonder though, if we can all agree that the postings here constitute "art" and the bodies depicted are beautiful...what's wrong w/ the bikini/hot babe threads? Is it because they are all so skinny and overtly sexual?
B/c if that's the criteria, well when many of the paintings posted here were made they were pretty risque for the time and depicted the "idea" woman of that era.

I guess what bothers me is, if a thread has a subject line that makes it pretty clear what is contained in the thread...people don't really have a leg to stand on if they complain about being offended.
Don't like skinny women in skimpy bikini's???
DON'T open a thread titled HOT BABES/BIKINI THREAD. Seems pretty simple to me.

But what do I know, I'm just a middle-aged guy who likes women...

Who was it said genuine eroticism involves a bit of cover? I think I just made that up, but it's true.

See, the nudes of Weston, and others which Emily posted, are genuinely intriguing because, in part, they show the woman not in a wanton display. She's incredibly beautiful, but she's got some mojo you haven't figured yet. I'm not a professional photographer, but it seems to me when you pose a woman in cheescake, all the parts on display, it ruins it. Eroticism, which from the Greek means connection, not necessarily sexual, is missing from the cheesecake. The cheesecake is essentially immature, IMHO.

Some great images here, thanks David.

Ish, that is SO correct. MOST women do NOT look good completely naked. But a LOT of women look totally hot in the right clothes! Couple that w/ a self confident attitude... WHOA!

So yeah, I'd agree that pictures that leave a little to the imagination are far sexier/erotic than anything you'll see in Penthouse, et al.

I dont think that is totally true, some of those mag employ very talented photographers, and nice looking women. Some of them might feel a little slighted by that generality.

Of course if a thread has a subject line that says 'no debate' you just know what's coming next.............and then the guy that started the thread starts debating what is or isn't a hot babe.

BTW, talking about art, you can tell a good nude if the bottom follows you about the room.

I think the main difference is that none of the women in these examples are participating in a gynecological exam. For me that's when a bikini picture crosses the line.

    Rod that was interesting.
I do find it sad that today, that so many young women feel compelled to
surgically modify their bodies. So I am not insensitive to the underling
current in these threads. But it also must be recognized that self mutilation has been a part of social adaptation from a very early time.( check out early Meninger) This is not to say that it should not change. But that a simplistic and paranoid reaction to the perceived coercive elements in the culture will not change much.
There is also the interest of free expression, and as that is connected to freedom to advertise, and ultimately to have free commerce, a conflict will always exist in a free society.

I should say that I spent many years drawing live models, and have a slightly different take on the beauty art stuff. I do think porn serves a some what different purpose, but is still in the realm of art.
Other aspects of it I will open for others to study.
But we are talking politics here, and that is the basic problem.
I dont care to have anyone tell me what I can think, and it is possible for me to a liberal view and a conservative view.
And I am not frightened by being conflicted in a struggle for clear thought.

I'm basically with Joe Dupere. The gynecological shots so popular these days aren't much erotic. They may be pornographic in the sense they are intended to facilitate masturbation, but they aren't erotic in the sense that they invite the viewer into a relationship. That distinction can be difficult to draw.

I'm not judging anyone for anything they do with a fellow consenting adult, or by themselves for that matter, but I think this thread has shown, in a way difficult to explain, what constitutes eroticism and what constitutes pornography. One involves a relationship, and the other involves an objectifying. Cheesecake of beautiful young women flashing their pudenda is, almost always, pornographic, and essentially demeaning. IMHO.

I don't find any human body, except once in awhile a diseased one, offensive. The Greek dying warrior, posted by George, is one of my favorite sculpltures of all time, and, oh my, it shows the guy's nasty bits! Lord, that's a beautiful sculpture.

And I have to get out and look at photography books some more. The nudes posted by Elf by Ruth Bernhard are quite beautiful.
So many questions, so little time.

I think, to get to the beauty one has to get outside the box. The Rev's contribution is firmly in the box for me while Ruth's photographs, made in the 1940s and '50s, are outside. They are neither nudes masquerading as studies in the effect of light, like Weston's, nor invitingly pre-pornographic like the weasels seem to be trying to be. Maybe I'm wrong, but I image men look at the weasels and imagine what they'd like to do with the model, and I'm pretty sure Weston did that with his nudes as well while pretending to be intellectual about it. He was a pretty raunchy guy I understand.

Ruth's images come closer to the spirit of greek sculpture for me, but they are often even more subtle.

I for one have been objectified a few times, like "hows your back", and "can you get this done". I dont cry in my beer, because its not cool. Talk about tiring, we all are objectified in one way or another.
there was a thread about bears objectifying humans, and people aren't putting down the bears. The fact that we all exist in our own free space make us objects to each other, and dont get all 60's
deep about it. Protect us all so we can become one, and nothing at the same time. You cant legislate morality. One is responsible for ones actions, and that includes those posing for the picture.

Hate to tell you this but your not in a relationship with either, they are
just pictures. And you personal high minded view of love, is not more moral than my pure desire for sex, if the case may be. Every one is entitled to there own fantasy, be that about sex, boats, travel, making money, or any thing else.

I agree with Memphis Mike, his photo depicts true beauty and is more in context with current times. It could be more "artsy" if the lighting was perhaps more dramatic, or perhaps she was looking down, but as it is, it illustrates plenty of natural feminine beauty for modern men.

Another point, obviously women's bodies are beautiful whether a photo or a painting representation, but faces and facial expressions should not be left out of the equation. As a matter of fact, I think marveous faces with great expressions are one of the most beautiful aspects of women's beauty throughout time.

    I rest my case.

I will say that in looking for sexy bikini photos, I did not find it easy.
But they are selling something, and the come hither look is part of that. But it seams to overlap into the realm of pseudo art also.
The real good stuff is hard to find. Maybe that is getting into art snobbery, and I try to keep am open mind.

    How about some figurehead art?

If I come across a marveous face, I usually save it... don't remember where I found it. Maybe on a google bikini search... course I cropped out all but the face. I really think women's faces are the absolutely most beautiful part of them in the physical sense.
