Default Small Boat Sailing, By E.F. Knight

I've been reading Small Boat Sailing, by E.F. Knight again. What a great little book. I recommend it. It was written in the UK in 1901 and is just full of info on different boats, sailing rigs, sailing, navigation, seamanship etc. He wrote it for the beginner but for those interested in traditional boats and sailing it's wonderful. It's easy to find as a used book too.

Yes, it was the standard beginner's textbook for many years. It pops up in Arthur Ransome's books in that capacity!

Knight was quite a character - his day job was as a war correspondent, in which capacity he lost an arm and then wrote an article on literally sailing singlehanded.

If you haven't already read them, you might enjoy "The Falcon on the Baltic" and "The Cruise of the Alerte" as well.

I just checked Abebooks and the first copy listed is right across town for $10. So don't any of you order that one, order the next one down the list.

In the little library on board "Dulcibella" there was a copy of another of E. F. Knight's books, the "Alert in the Baltic", I believe, about his cruises in a converted P and O lifeboat.
