B-Kanot (swedish lazer style sailing dingy) restoration

hello, it has taken me some time to update this project I started last spring. And I believe I have finally figured out how to post pictures here the [ and ] are the keys to this!! Anyway here is the update:



So I got this boat for a wopping 1000 swedish Kronor, thats like 100 bucks in the states. Its old, worn, and had a small hole. But it had new rigging and was in overall okay shape. Did I get a good deal, thats the first question. Here I am glowing with my new purchase:

So I started scrapping paint, the bottom was filled with bubbles from dampness under the paint, and most of it wanted to come off. The rest had to follow along. When the plywood started showing, it was becoming clear that there was not much tape left on the joints:

Next that crack/hole needed fixing. A flat surface makes cutting with a router much easier:

but there was more rot so the hole got bigger:




The back side of the patch being pulled into place and epoxied. This extended aft another foot to firm up the softened area behind the hole. Copper thread was used to pull that area in:


After that I retaped the outside seams, and here begining fairing the hull again:


And now more of that west system fairing spackel is sanded off, and a sealing coat has been put on, and the boat has been hung up for the winter in the garage to make room for the car that we put away in the winter...... merry christmas little boat and we will continue next spring!!

I've been working on this boat at my partners parents house about 40 minutes way, we live in stockholm in an apartment and no garage to call my own. I have put about a good solid week of scrapping, glueing, and sanding, and coating into this boat so far, about 60 hours. I´ll get more updates out next spring, but enjoy this for now!

I wouldn't exactly call it a dinghy, but it is a great looking boat. Keep us up to speed.

Cool boat! Looks alot like a Finn. I'd love to see it rigged and see how the control lines work. Looks to be a symetric set up so you can adjust on either tack.

SO fast forward to the end of the project.... sorry another boat got in the way, then things went really quickly. So here is the final product. I went with hempel 2-part paint and "diamond varnish" I thought the 2-part varnish was really hard to work with.




She sails pretty well, though I think I am alittle to big for a boat with a boom that can be moved up when tacking. I have to pack myself into the floor to stay out of the way, head to the floor, not the best way to see where you are going! But a fun boat over all.

Superb Chainyank! I love the fact this is a mini double ender! Lovely finish to the bright-work and really great colour coordination! looks like you could just about get up to a plane in her.
