I love questions like this. There are so many reasons why boats get named! OK, Mine. We have a 12' John Brooks "Ellen Dinghy" Named ELLEN. It is the prototype boat, built by Brooks for my mother Ellen Brawley. During construction it was reffered to as 'The Ellen Dinghy' as it was designed and build to her specifications. When finished, John had carved the name, ELLEN, in the transom, to her surprise. She was gifted to my wife and I as wedding present by my mother in 2002. I used to have a Moth named 'Gypsy', for two reasons: One, well, it's a Moth! and Two, my great grandfather, Frank C. Paine, designed and sailed at least 5 boats named 'Gypsy', and had Starling Burgess design for him another, so History! We will one day have a boat named 'JO' Scots for beloved, what my wife's maternal grandparents called eachother. I used to have an International 10sq M Canoe named 'Aqualung'. It came with the name and after a few years, I realized it rather fit the vessel. My sister has a 30' sloop named 'Bolero' with a tender named 'Mozart', just to confuse people. Ravel's Bolero is, of course well known, but more to the point, Mozart never wrote one! One of my great grandfather's Dark Harbor 20s had a name that was pronounced Ga-Zink. He never explained how it was spelled, except that it was a pallindrome. Needless to say, Not painted on the transom. She was lost in Hurricane Carol in 1953.

I saw a dinghy named Osyter. It was a nice one - and the name was carved into the transom. It was always on the dinghy dock at a marina. Finally met the owner and asked him why. He said the carver misspelled Oyster. He would have had to rebuild the transom to change it - but he like it - and no one would steal a boat named Osyter.

妈祖, or Mazu, pronounced something like Maatsu, is kind of a joke on my own name, but also:
Mazu is something like a mix of a saint and a goodess, protecting fishermen and sailors.

"Louise" - after my cat. I just like the name.

A not very serious name for a not very serious boat.

My boat is a Tasman seabird. I was thinking of renaming it (from Waterwitch) to Laridae. That's the taxonomic name for many seabirds like gulls and terns.

But I recently heard the Dharawal story of two brothers who bickered and the older one push the younger one who fell to a barren earth. He couldn't get back and he cried and cried and created the sea. His brother is the wind trying to bring him home by lifting the waves. The boy who fell is Narawarn. I keep my boat on Dharawal country and I'd like for that to be acknowledged, but I also don't want to appropriate someone else's culture.

Our H28 "Bright Star" was named that when she was built. A Chinese Resturanture from Hong Kong bought her and changed her name to "Jin Lung", which means Lucky Dragon. She had the name written in Cangjie which was nice but not readable to us round eyes. After we became her stewards we felt that her original name suited her better and changed her name back to "Bright Star" we then named her dinghy "Twinkle".

On a summit of a Mtn in County Sligo Ireland is a massive stone cairn supposedly the grave site of Queen Maeve built sometime about 3500 BC. Knockneara is the name of the Mtn which overlooks and out toward the Atlantic Ocean. An easy climb we made a few yrs back on another trip to Ireland we made. The 10 letters involved however has still hampered my desire to hand carve her name.knockneara.jpg

    Ruckus

You'd understand if you've ever ridden in the back seat of one of these next to the tailpipe. Unmuffled engines sound great at idle, but they're not great for conversation at speed.

After a recent and significant fuel leak into the bilge, "Stinky", "Bonfire", and "Pyre" were briefly considered for re-Christening. With thanks to the Meredith, NH fire department, that ceremony wasn't necessary!

I built this little girl, a Phil Bolger Teal, back in the Fall and Winter of 1982. She is named SUSIE, a name which came to me as I remembered my paternal grandfather's habit of nicknaming everyone. In some cases, he had instituted Category Nicknames, and the case of women's nicknames was one of those. A woman who hadn't yet been dubbed with a particular nickname would be referred to, either directly, first person, or indirectly by two names, Susie or Ruthie. Susie was the "acceptable female" and Ruthie was a woman who had, for any reason, fallen out of the first category. The first Ruthie was the girlfriend of one of my dad's buddies who had given up on waiting for Dino, her boyfriend, to Put A Ring On It, and gone off looking for greener pastures. You get the picture.

Here's Susie, after her 35th birthday restoration. She's provided a lot of good times for me, my wife, my children, who are now grown and have their own children, and our friends.

Oh, yeah. The spars, rudder, leeboard, and oars haven't yet gotten their 35th Anniversary Birthday Suits.

A 35 year old Teal? Wow!
Talk about maximum fun on the water for minimum investment!

My "Summer Breeze" skiff finally has a name painted on her bow, La Madalena.

Because she was one of the smallest vessels to take part in the "Salish Armada" (the salish 100 cruise) I named her after one of the smallest vessels in the Spanish Armada.
The ship I intended to name her after was of the Guipuzcoan squadron, had but one cannon, and perhaps she should really be called Pinaza Madalena to distinguish her from a ship of a similar name of 18 guns in the Biscayne fleet.

Edit- As far as I can tell, Pinaza (or pinnace) Madalena did survive the armada. Both of them.
