Finished building a 16 foot lumberyard skiff and launched her a bunch of weeks ago but now have some photos my friend emailed me. Took me 8 months of sporadic work(a couple hours here and there with a number of gaps where I did nothing for a few weeks). Used Lowes AC exterior, PL cement, stainless square drives, and painted with Ben Moore exterior. Looks not bad for big box lumber but we'll see how it holds up. Heard there were some others on here who wanted to build one of these. Hardest part was the chine, otherwise very straightforward. I have about a hundred pictures of the building process on my laptop if anyone is interested. Wallace

Fine looking work skiff you've made there. Congrats on your launching and maiden voyage. Where and how do you intend to use it? Do you trailer or moor? I for one, would love to see more pictures of the building process. Thorne has the current best "How to" for photo posting instructions. Walter Baron tells me that this is his most popular design and he builds them for everyone from clammers to flats guides. Enjoy!

So I do moor it in a salt marsh, so I did use a few coats of interlux bottom paint.

I have found with the 30hp two stroke 1985 Mariner that the boat is somewhat overpowered. I can hardly go above 1/2 throttle without the thing just going too fast and it getting scary. It could probably be powered with an 18hp. I am seriously considering something like a tohatsu 18hp 4 stroke. Any thoughts? I have seen a few times where a boat may feel heavy in the yard but when you put it on the water it suddenly can feel a lot lighter. It is framed inside with 4x4's.

I mainly use it to fish, take around to the beach etc. It is the best type of boat I have seen for doing a lot of inshore, "skinny water", striper fishing we like to do around structure in New England. I have been drifting through pretty much 6 inches of water without a problem(with the motor up of course).

If you keep it painted and covered when not in use it will last a good long time, good work!

Nice job! I like the idea of inexpensive boats that are easy for people to build. Much preferred by me to the plastic stuff that is out there and expensive, and also contributes to carbon loading of the atmosphere.
By using wood we are not releasing as much carbon from the earth but mearly using the carbon that is in circulation. Anything we can do to lesson our "carbon footprint" is a good thing.

Please post the pictures, we love pictures.

That would be a great little Sea Duck hunting boat if i was 20 long.

What do you coat it with? Fiberglass cloth & Resin inside & out?

Do you put in a floor to make it self bailing and styrofoam between the deck to keep it floating high?


What would it cost to build one?

what is the best way to get photos online so people can look at them? i have a hundred or so photos of the building process that would probably be really useful for anyone interested in the project to see.

i built this boat with fiberglass layers on the bottom running transversely across the seams where the bottom panels joined each being about 10 inches wide. there were three seams like this. all other adhesive used was PL cement to get the bottom on, and for all the other pieces. this vessel is only three months old but it has been in a lot of rough water so far. i am now a firm believer in PL premium. total cost of materials for whole project was about 600 dollars including paint. could have used stainless nails instead of square drive screws but enjoyed using the cordless too much.

Search the forum, there are several threads floating around. I use photobucket, as it is pretty painless and user friendly, not to mention has a remarkable up-time.

Im interested in seeing it! Always loved the Brockway Skiffs, and these are pretty close relatives.

This winter am planning on trying a basic rowing dory like the weekend skiff. Want to find a way to make it on a tight budget with PL cement, some wood, and some house paint.

Thanks for the info. about the HP.....I have a 30 hp, just trying to pick the boat to build around it.

Any comments about the ride? I was tempted to buy plans, but was concerned about "pounding" from a flat bottom hull. If you did it again, would you go for flat bottom or choose a "v" hull instead?

i would still go with the flat bottom even though you are right they certainly do pound more in the chop. the reason i say this is that i like to fish and go out when it is pretty calm so if it is at all significantly choppy i never want to go out that much anyways. if there is a small amount of chop it is passable and worth it for the extra space, stability, and less draft provided by having a flat bottom. the skiff thrives on close, inshore, "skinny" water fishing and exploring which is my favorite thing to do so i need the flat bottom to pole around in ten inches of water sometimes. i would get the plans and build a 16 footer-this length is perfect for two to three people fishing yet requires not that much power as i think it could be moved around at quite a good pace with 15-20 hp.
