    Default Night Sailing

Well its been unseasonably warm this week. Its 75 deg out and a strong thermals around 5:30 so i grabbed lucky dog and said what the hell Let's Go Sailin Heading out into heavy chop and diminishing daylight with the sails raised and running lights on was a new experience for me.

As we rounded Worlds End the breeze really picked up. It was an almost scary situation since the winds around here can be fickle and gusty I had not realized how much i used my sense of sight to forecast gusts as the moved across the water. With out that sense i had to hone my instincts and other senses like hearing the wind direction and approaching gusts and their subtle directional change.
It was scary but also within my learning curve. I gained confidence enough to handle the situation and pulled in to Garrison to enjoy a well earned beer. With the sails stowed it should be an uneventful motor home.

no video cause you need light to film

You just keep honing those instincts, buddy. Choppy waves at night can look a lot like this:

The problem with posting on the iPhone is it has an auto correct feature when typing so if you are marginally off spelling as I sometimes have been known to be It will correct the word in a totally off way.

I was hoping this thread would take a different direction but hey it is what it is

Well I owe Joe and others photos of Dove, but my computer won't do a bunch of stuff right now, so I have to figure out a way.I had my buddy Larry take some photos of us out the other day, a beauty of a day with about 10 kts of wind. I was out sunday in 20+ kts... another great day. Dove likes the wind. I have a whole new respect for dories.

    Night sailing isn't so bad!

As long as I keep hearing the lobster pots buoys hit the hull I'm okay. It's when they stop that I start worrying.

I used to sail at night fairly regularly.... but I suspect that incident and ambient light from the shore is a lot brighter in my part of Narragansett Bay, than it is on the Hudson.

My biggest concern was running into an unlighted buoy, of which there are a few in my area.... the advent of gps/chartlplotters took that fear away.

Wind conditions on upper Narragansett Bay at night are usually quite steady, so it's also probably a bit easier than on the Hudson.
