    Cool Ian Ougthred Plans

Interested in any comments from forumites on using Ougthred's plans ...any particular problems for the slightly above average builder.
Are they fairly complete and accurate. I am considering a design in the 15 to 18 foot range for suitable for both sail and rowing.
    Thanks in advance.

Iain Oughtred is by a considerable margin my favorite living designer! His plans are reasonably complete, though he doesn't take you by the hand every step of the way in his plans alone. I would reccommend his book Clinker Plywood Boatbuilding for a complete step-by-step rundown with hundreds of clear, informative pictures.
As far as "a design in the 15 to 18 foot range for suitable for both sail and rowing". . . . .

    . . . .I like this one the best.

    Mark,

This is not an answer to your question, but I wonder if you and the others are aware that this site:

    http://www.jordanboats.co.uk/JB/iain_oughtred.htm

has posted Iain's catalog in PDF format. Makes for a nice "wish book".

Iain's plans are more detailed than average. However, be aware that he is a very good draftsman and as such seldom double dimensions anything. So if you are not used to reading engineering drawings, you will really need to study the plans to find all the information you need to properly build the boat. That said, the drawings are complete and accurate. He does provide full size drawings of all stations, stems, transoms and other critical details. I second the suggestion to purchase his book "The Clinker Plywood Boatbuilding Manual". It shows clearly how to build all the details, although it is not specific to any one boat design. The other book that I found invaluable is "Ultralight Boatbuilding" by Thomas J. Hill. The method described in that book of using battens on the mold to lay out the strakes works very well and almost ensures a correctly planked boat, especially for a first time plywood lapstrake builder.

I am an experienced woodworker, but Iain Oughtred's Ness Yawl was my first boat. I found the plans excellent and his book a big help. Don is right about studying the plans carefully. Everything you need is there, somewhere, but you have to look carefully. Here's the result:

I'll add to the recommendation to get Iain's boatbuilding book - I wore out my first copy, and am on my second now. Iain's catalog is also a nice wish book, and there are a number of designs for sail and oar boats in the 15-18' range. Both are available thru our sponsor. I just purchased a set of plans for Eun na Mara, and will spend quite a few hours studying the plans. That's not a bad thing, the plans are fantastic. For this boat, a good set of plans is essential, this will not be a simple build. The first thing I did was make a copy of the plans so I could have something to scribble a bunch of notes on.

Thumbs up Re: Ian Ougthred Plans

Not much to add to the others, except to say that if you have a boat "in you" you'll get one out with Iain's plans.

When I started building my Eun Mara the plans were not complete. They had maybe 2/3 the detail of the final sheets. What Iain would do is provide me with black line photocopies of each sheet as he added to them and once complete, he would send along the final blue-line drawings. I must have something like 20 sheets in all. He even sent along a second sail plan because (as far as I can tell) he added one minor correction, the shoulder for the mastband at the top of the mast. He also doesn't seen to mind helping you out with copies of articles featuring the boats etc.

Get in touch with the Oughtred Yahoo (tons of experience here)group at:

    Good Luck,

    Thanks to all,
A great resource this forum is. I am ordering the book and then need to decide on the design. So many....and so little time.

I see several different places selling his plans. Who is best to buy the plans from? Can you buy from Ian himself?

    ddeaton -
I'm not sure there's a "best" place to buy the plans from. Stateside, the Wooden Boat store offers some of Iain's designs - the Cal Yawl, Acorn 15, and Whilly Boat come to mind. But these are not all of his designs, and may not be the current versions. For example, Whilly Boat has been redone as Whilly Tern, and there's a seven-strake version of the Caledonia Yawl available. (That being said, I've ordered a number of items from Wooden Boat Store and have nothing but praise for the goods I've ordered). Classic Marine across the pond, as far as I know, offers all of Iain's designs, and you can order on-line.
You can order direct from Iain, address is Struan Cottage, Bearnisdale, Isle of Skye, Scotland IV519NS. From the time I sent the check to the day I received the plans was three weeks, which I consider pretty good considering a round trip to Scotland and back.

You can purchase directly from Ian. You can contact him by phone at 011 44 1470 532 732. I called him and confirmed a price for the Tammie Norrie plans. From a later post it would seem that at receipt at his end you will get the plans in about three weeks time.
